TRYING to install locally but failing

Hey all,

First I want to say that doing the "quick" install is a great idea for newbies but I run my own local webserver and I ALWAYS install stuff here first before I make it live on my domain host.

However…

Your download section does not give me this option so I am attempting to use the "quick" install but after filling out the info and clicking the button I get this:

The FTP directory that was given is not valid (2) ← (this has been a one OR a two I have gotten both.)

Now, I have tried NUMEROUS directory entries but nothing has worked so far. Would someone PLEASE tell me what I am not getting? (for someone like me, I usually miss the simple stuff  :$ )

Thanks,

Ethereal

Hi,

You probably aren't running a local FTP server.

The manual installation package is available from our download page though (I just checked :)). I assume you're using Windows: we have a tutorial that might help.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Oops, sorry for not mentioning this but I run Fedora Core 4 (Linux), Apache/2.0.54, PHP Version 5.0.4, MySQL 4.1.16, ProFTPD 1.2.10-6.

So… now you see my dilemma. And in case this is important, my computer sits behind a dsl router and I doubt the provider allows for incoming "ftp-like" access. So, if someone could just point me to where I can download the manual install file I can do it all myself.    Ok?

Thanks,

Thanks so much Chris, I really appreciate it. I look forward to installing and working with it. Form the demos I've seen I looks WAY better than the others I've tried.
