Trying to increase title length in news block

Okay, so I am finally getting around to trying to adjust my templates and CSS for v8 on my test site.

On my front page, I have my blog that uses the main_multi-content block. I have adjusted NEWS_PIECE_SUMMARY.tpl to remove the avatar and to move the author link into the posted byline.

I want to increase the length of the title that can appear on a line and the underscore beneath it. I know it is buried in the CSS but am not sure where to start looking since it is in a standardbox_main_classic and I want to only affect this news/blog listing, not necessarily every instance of standardbox_main_classic.

I sure am hoping that the fully-sponsored feature to scrap standardboxes is going to make this much more approachable for users: 0000263: Purchase to Download - attach downloadable files that must be purchased before downloading - ocPortal feature tracker

Any help is very much appreciated.

Of course, I figured this out right after asking for help.

In news.css, change
.standardbox_wrap_classic .news_piece_summary h3, .rss_summary h3 {
   margin-{!en_right}: 130px;
   border-bottom: 1px solid #70714c; /* */

to
.standardbox_wrap_classic .news_piece_summary h3, .rss_summary h3 {
   margin-{!en_right}: 20px;
   border-bottom: 1px solid #70714c; /* */

Note that this is the value subtracted from the length (or added to the right margin).

Thanks, Fletch. Of course, it turns out that this was updated in v8 so the actual code i have now is:

Code

.standardbox_wrap_classic .news_piece_summary h3, .rss_summary h3 {
   margin-{!en_right}: 20px !important;
   border-bottom: 1px solid #70714c !important; /* {$,wizard, 100% medborder.border} */
}

This is actually not the exact same as news.css in v8 which has dropped the .standardbox_wrap_classic selector. But when I remove this, it does not display with my changes so I have removed it. I am guessing that I need to change something in NEWS_PIECE_SUMMARY.tpl but I can't figure out what needs to be dropped. I have carved up this particular template quite a bit to have it not display avatars. Guess, I will need to take a look into this in the future unless someone can point me in the right direction from their own experience.

I've got my test site all updated except for this and one other question I have unanswered. I am anxious to update my live site but am thinking I better wait since I'll most likely be out this evening if something goes wrong. Besides, the weekends are among my busiest days. What to do, what to do?  lol

Cut back on sleep and cancel all social commitments!

Seriously, if those are the only two issues that are causing you concern, then you are waaaaaaaay ahead of the herd.

But there are some hidden gotcha's too. Can't be more explicit as our two sites are poles apart in colour and display. Most of my 'problems' arose from the dark background I use, and the fact that I have HAD a lot of overrides in most of my custom-theme '_custom' folders. I even found a couple or three in my default '_custom' folders, a result of inserting out of cycle fixes offered to various individuals. I downloaded them, inserted them in the relevant '_custom' folders and forgot about them. Let that be a warning to the unwary!

 :thumbs:

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

I am fortunate that I had already checked my folders for the 'default' theme and had nothing strange in them. I'm pretty close to the default theme with just the theme wizard applied so the upgrade should not be too much. So I am currently taking and testing backups (with my site closed) and will attempt the upgrade on my live site. I have all the needed changes already made to my test site so I can just copy them over.

Then the fun will begin with my users breaking things  :)

in them with a bunch of gobbledygook. I checked the entries in the content management and resaved the pages and, fortunately, everything was okay.

Now, I wonder what problems I will have while I am out trying to enjoy myself but most likely thinking about potential problems. Will I succumb to checking my site while I am out. Let's hope not.
