hi there,

just a small question.

I chater my webspace from a big modder community for a small pricing :-). Everything is fine for that price, the only thing is i dont have much traffic (5GB per month)

Before I used smf for my littel community with about 100 people. For chating we used an channel in irc. Because I know that chat software does much traffic on websides.

Now I want switch to ocp.

Does the chat and IM system from ocp create much traffic?

In terms of bandwidth it shouldn't use a whole lot. Every few seconds each user has a request to the server which will give a response with maybe 100 bytes (I haven't calculated, but it's not excessive).

It doesn't download the full chat history every few seconds like some systems do.

As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

This goes along with what was mentioned.

I my self have used a few different shoutboxes. The inferno shoutbox, which is no longer made used to refresh ever 30 seconds and reload all the shouts that were displayed.

The shoutout shoutbox I used to have which recently stopped being supported worked differently.
When no one was shouting or talking in the shoutbox it became a static part of the site and only refreshed if some one said some thing and only refreshed for those who had it open and had not passed the idle time out.

The IP.shoutbox, the one made by IPS, which I changed to a few weeks ago does the same thing.

Does the ocp chat room/ shoutbox do that?

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

The ocPortal shoutbox doesn't actually refresh except when you move between screens. However, the chat room uses AJAX to check for new posts and loads just those posts when they arrive.

So the chat room basically works the same as shoutout and Ip.shoutbox.

I noticed its a lot less cpu intensive set that way. :)

Thanks.
