Why is the export in add on's?
It took me 2 days to find export for themes as philip said there was one, before he said it I was no aware of one.
So I went looking just as I did before when making themes.
I looked in the spots where I thought it should be, first in styles, was no there.
Looked in back up, was not there either.
So I clicked on every icon in the admin zone except add ons cuz it sounded stupid of me to check in there as thats for ad ons.
Well today I looked though the documents on here for it, which need a bit of updatting as a few links do not work.
I ended up finding a screen shot that said to click on add ons so I did and I saw export.

I mean I like ocPortal but its not easy to find things in the admin zone as very little is where I would expect it.
I know you have on your site some where that you say the admin zone is easy to navagate and says some thing about expecting things to be where they are. I would have to look for the exact wording but I think you get what I mean.
I just can not agree with that though but I do still like ocPortal even with it's hard to navigate admin zone.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Another sugestion.
I was trying to export the theme I made and it kept telling me it was done but did not bring up a window to download the theme I just exported.
I ran it 5 times each time it said it was complete but did not bring up a download window or had a place to down load it.
So I was thinking to my self where did it go?
So I checked ftp, since it was the adons thing that I used to make it I looked in the import folder was not in there then I saw and export folder and I saw several Tar files in there so I downloaded them.
So my sugestion is to have a download window come up when you export. Or have it look the back up and have a list of the exports you can download.

BTW way is no one replying to this or any other thread I made in the last few days?

Those are both very good ideas, and we'll think hard about putting them in the next version. :)

Thanks things like this will make things easier for new members.
Having the theme export with in the styles in a smart move and what most other cms's and forums do.
I know your busy and have a lot of work today and I might be making more work but just remember I am trying to help out.
I would not post sugestions if I did not care about the future of ocPortal.

EDIT: Import for themes should also be in the styles.

Thanks - your suggestion makes sense. We'd probably not have noticed the problem ourselves, we know the system too well.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Indeed thats why you need outsiders like me helping tweak the system to profection.
I am honestly glad you take sugestions some do not.
I have given sugestions for other systems, including IPB and most times it is just shoved back in my face.
