Alright, I'm sure to some this is going to sound INSANELY dumb. But I can't figure it out, so I felt I should ask.

I've been using the OCPortal's Forum since we started using it, but my members seem to want something "more". VBulletin is something we were familiar with, but I simply cannot afford nor justify to my husband a $100-$180 expense for a bulletin board on the internet. ^_^;

So, I began looking into the board being supported by OCP.

Now, I have 2 questions.

1. Which board will allow us the same functions as the present VBulletin (since you can't get THAT for free. :/)?
2. How might I switch over to the NEW forum, while keeping everything in TACT on my present forum (IE: just transferring all the threads and posts to the new forum along with the members, without having to start over, and using the same webpage as the "forum" uses now, that is hosted by OCP.)?

If anyone needs any further explanation, I'll do my best to comply. ^_^;
Basically, all I want to do, is switch to a new board, making sure all the old information just transfers over as seamlessly as possible. :3

Thank you!

have you looked at smf?

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

I have briefly looked at SMF. :3 .. I downloaded it, and would love to get it running as our forum. But I'm still curious how to get the ball rolling on making the smooth transition without a loss of ANY data from the current forum. ^_^;

Hmm I am not aware of a converter that goes from ocportal's forum to a different forum.
Chris might have to help you with that.

Welcome and I hope Chris is able to help you.
I did do some thing like it manually but every one had to be given a random password.

Unfortunately no. No one has answered my question as of yet, and I'm just not able to make any progress to find the answer on my own, despite all my searching. :'(

Oh I was hopping Chris would reply to this.
I do not know of any converter from ocf to smf or any other forum script for that matter.
I know I did it manually but that did require a lot of work and resetting of all passwords.

Sorry, I'd have answered if I could help, but I'm afraid I can't in this case.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

May I ask why.
there should be an easy why of converting from one forum to the next, like the converters smf and ipb has.
Although mybe this is a job for the smf team to create a converter?

Hi. Sorry that no one answered your question - please understand these are largely user to user forums, and we don't necessarily read and respond to everything here. If you need a direct response, use the link on our website to open a support ticket.

Since I'm here, I'll briefly say that there currently is no such exporter to go from ocPortal's forum to vBulletin. As always, we are happy to do custom work, though we charge an hourly fee for such work. Open a support ticket if it's something you'd like to pursue.

Sorry again that you've been waiting for a reply here. For guaranteed responses in the future, be sure to open a ticket.

Thanks.

This is it exactly, it's outside our normal domain of control.

What Allen said is also true. We often do post on these forums, but ultimately they are user to user, and to that end if I don't have a resolution I probably won't post. I want to encourage users to help each other, so I do sometimes force myself to hold back trying to answer everything as tough as that is for me to do. I don't want to hurt the community by not giving it a chance to grow on it's own.

As a business we can actually help in almost any situation, but since part of the context of this topic was saving money, it wouldn't have helped if I'd offered our commercial services to write a new importer, as that would cost more than the vBulletin licence.

Ah good point I did try and help her the best I could but this is also beyond me.
But like I had mentioned I had done it manually, and depending on the size of her forum and the amount of members and post this may take a long time and may require the site to be down for a while until its all done.

and IPB also does the same thing and has user to user support on the forum specially for things out side of the norm on ipb. For errors and things just open a ticket unless the error is with some thing that you added. A few of the recent tickets I have had which were cookie issues they just logged into my board and fixed it.

I think ocportal needs a lot more members who are able to help.
I know some things and am considered an expert by some but i am still very limited on what I can do or help with and i feel bad when I can not help a member and no one else has been able to as well. Like in this case.
I just do not like seeing people frustrated.

Hmm doing some thinking about this I wonder how easy the Private topics would be to convert over.
From my understanding they are in the same table in the database as the other topics and posts unlike other forum scripts which they are in their own table in the database so those might be lost.
I was looking at Sailor moon's site though and not to many topics are posts exist as well as not to many members so it should not take to long to do it manually.  but i think before she does that that she needs to make a topic on the site of the forum she wishes to use.

Oh both IPB and VBulletin charge for conversions, unless its in their list of converters and ocportal is not in the list.
