using the installer

I am sure this is an easy one for everyone who knows anything…

I am in the process of installing and am stuck.  I am on step 4 of 10.  The last section is ocPortal Settings and I don't know what to do there.  Everything was filled in for me except the password.  Database name was ocf.  Database host was localhost which is what is said it usually is.  Database Username said root.  Then Password was blank.

I don't know what to do there!!  I can't get past this point.  Please help!!

Hi Jweaver!

The section holding you up is defining to OCP the crendentials it will need to communicate with the MySQL database server. If you are on a shared hosting platform, you should have the ability to define this information via whatever hosting control panel package you are using. All of the fields you have mentioned will have to match what was setup with your hosting server. At the very least, a database will need to be created ahead of time and entered into the Database Name field.

Keep us posted!

You lost me after "the section holding you up is…"!

I am not too familiar with mysql (ok…it's completely confusing) and all of that stuff.  I am in cpanel but not sure where to go from there.  I am not sure what my database username in the ocportal settings should be.
I get these error messages if it is any help:
"could not connect to database server.  Access denied for user "" Using password: YES"

I get that every time, trying different usernames except for this case…where if I enter in the database username the original name I used in Cpanel then I get this message: "could not connect to database server.  Access denied for user "" to database ocf"

Cpanel, OK, here we go:

  1. Create a database using cPanel and give it whatever name you'd like
  2. Add access rights to that database via username and password. This should be part of the process in cPanel of creating a database
  3. In the OCP installer, fill out the appropriate fields regarding database with the information you have from step #1 and #2
  4. Should be good to go!

A little primer on MySQL - this software package is simply a database engine where you can record and retrieve information. Something like Microsoft Access and Filemaker Pro. One of the other things that MySQL has is access control. This keeps unauthorized people or computers from accessing data that they shouldn't. So, the information that OCP is looking for during install is as follows:

Database Name: what database should OCP store and retrieve it's information from

Database User: what user should OCP use when trying to connect to the database
Database Pass: what password should OCP send in conjunction with the above username

Database host: what computer should OCP be connecting to (this can be left at localhost since MySQL and OCP will be running on the same server)
