Forums and Point System

I am very happy with ocPortal but for some of my needs, ocPortal just isn't cut out for them. For what I want, I think the gallery is just very bulky. I'm not sure what it is.. but it's less flow-going. Or maybe I am just looking for a ordered-list instead of having to scroll through the videos? Something more similar to YouTube-style. Possible to do this?

Also, I'm not even sure where I'm going with ocPortal as of yet. I love the blog system.. even if it is really just a news system – but it makes sense, and people can contribute. I haven't even explored the other options of it aside from clicking "Social Community" or similar to that option. I was wondering if it's possible to just use certain features of ocPortal as a CMS.

For example, I think it has an amazing Forums system. Easy to use and the attachment feature is great. I may still want to include a blog section.

I'd also like to use the Point System with this which is a great feature to get people to post and almost feel like they are in somewhat a competition to be better.

So I noticed when I click on the Forums, it takes me to an entirely separate area of my main Home page.

But on the ocPortal site, I can still see the Point leader-board, the last 10 point gifts, etc. How do I get this to show up on the side forums? Basically thinking I'm just going to use the Forums as my Social System, my Blog, and I would like to also include the Shoutbox on the side.

So I'm thinking when users log into the main area, they are automatically brought to the Forums Page. On top, they can select the Blogs area, the Point Store, the Video section (which is external to ocPortal). So to do this, I probably just leave that Zone Menu there.

I'm sure all this is possible, or most. But just wanting to know where I start.

The forums are in a separate 'zone' to the 'site' zone. If you click 'Edit in zone editor' (should be at the bottom of each panel) or alternatively find the Zone Editor through the Admin Zone, you will be able to add menus to the Forum zone's left or right panels. It's all 'Comcode', so whatever you put on a standard Comcode page can also be placed on one of the side panels. For example, the following code, placed anywhere on the website (Comcode pages, panels, a forum post) will render a menu:

Code

[block="forum_personal" caption="Menu x" type="tree"]side_stored_menu[/block]

Simple! :)

From the Admin Zone you can set up redirects to any module/page on your site.

You can also, as you said, use the zone menu to customise the menu to show whichever links you want.

Thank you Robbie.

Seems easy enough :).

I do have another question.

I display the Site Statistics to the public. Where is this file located or the option to choose what I want to show? I have seen in my searches for ocPortal sites.. I saw on one site that they weren't showing everything, such as their site ranking or the hits per day.

I believe you will find that in block options.

adminzone>setup>configuration>block options

Ah yes, not sure why I had a memory block there. Thanks Brian.

I've set up the menu but for some reason it won't display.

Well if you look at these forums, you will see on the side some blocks. ocPortal can do this.

I want this for my website, having the blocks still enabled on the forums. I went into the Admin Zone, created a block menu, but it's not showing at all. It claims it is, but nothing shows.

Have a look:
Forums - YouTrippy

There should be a list of blocks on the right side of the forums which carry over from the main page (so I just copied the code from the Zone Editor), but nothing is showing up.

Got it. It's not showing them because the zone is set to display in its 'wide' mode. In wide mode, the left & right panels are not rendered.

If you add &wide=0 onto the end of the url (like this link: Forums - YouTrippy) then you'll see what it looks like with wide mode turned off.

To turn it off, go to to Admin Zone -> Structure -> Zones, edit your zone, and set 'wide' to off.
