Silly Question #4

Greetings,

Hopefully this will be my last silly question.

I have decided to disable to points system as it is simply something my sites do not need. However I still want to use a progressing rank system (ie… members go up in membership).

However it looks like that all member group ranks are based on points. Since I disabled the points system this means I cannot have a progressing rank system.

So my question is, Is there a way I can base member group promotion on post count instead of point count?

Sorry, but that's not a feature. You can, however, leave the points addon installed but deny access to the 'points' page and change the configuration so that points aren't quoted in the stats blocks. That will mostly eliminate the visibility of points from the site.

Oh really? Darn…

Hmm well doing that could emulate a post count promotion system…

Though after thinking about it some more perhaps I can also use points to emulate a karma like system.

Yeah… I think that is what I will do instead. Set the points to 1 point per post and maybe a bit more for other things… no points per time/day though. Set the gift points the same and members could then help each other out if they like for example what another person posted. I think I could make that work.

Thanks for your answer.

Um… When I went and reinstalled the points addon I got a 500 Internal Error Page.

Now anytime I try to go into the admin zone, members, list.. bascially anything besides the site front page and the forums page, I get a 500 Internal Error page.

And this is just from installing the points addon.

I put a lot of work into the site i am building and would hate to have to do it all over again (though my database dumps can probably shorten the time it takes to get back to that point, I am afraid that the database dumps have the site without points or point store). Is there anyway I can fix this problem?

Whoops- I think this is a bug that only affects certain servers. Using FTP remove world-write permissions from the 'site' and 'adminzone' directories.

Greetings,

Thanks for your response.. however the problem is still there.

I changed the permissions of adminzone and site to 775 (removing only world write permissions) as instructed. However going into the admin zone still takes me straight to the 500 Internal Error page.

Please note I am running  ocPortal 4.1.4.

If there is any other information I can give please let me know.

Try removing also group write permissions.

If it still doesn't work, check your web server error log and see if anything comes up.

The problem is that when the addon was reinstalled ocPortal set permissions for any directory it contains files under; it was supposed to only do this for new directories, but it did it for existing ones too. Unfortunately your server gives 500 errors if there are excess permissions.

Greetings,

That worked!
Note to anyone else who ever gets this problem, make sure both admin zone and site are set to 755.

Thanks much Chris! I appreciate it!

You could count a members posts and do whatever calculations to do your post point ranking...

Right. I did that. I have one point for every post.

But I also decided to take it a step further and give points for other contributions and allow the giving of points (and for my mods the charging/ giving negative points as well) to be a sudo karma like system.

Can I release what as a plug in or mod?

All I did was I went into the Points configuration in the Site Configuration and changed what gave points and how many. I didn't make anything as all the tools are already there (which is what makes ocPortal so awesome).
