Is there a way for the admin or system to grant points?

Is there a way for the admin or system to grant points thus elevating a member to a particular level?

Since I don't allow members to add galleries or add images themselves for security reasons, (You can read the topic "Restricting children galleries from adopting new parents" for more on this) I still want to be able to reward them for providing images for their galleries. and give them status as a gallery artist.
  • I know that admin can give his own points via gift point transactions which draws down on admin points and this does contribute toward usergroup points.
  • Another way is to adjust points for a particular action such as IOTD or add image and have the member perform them - I can't grant points this way as I have mentioned previously above.
  • and points can be charged a member either in a negative or positive way - this doesn't seem to accrue as points which affect usergroups but does allow the member to use those points in the points store.
I was also wondering if you can create new usergroups? - I have not modified the usergroup system at all -(yet?)

Any comments and help are appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

I think negative charging would work, but I think they need to post once in the forum for ocPortal to detect that they deserve a rank upgrade.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Re: Usergroups

Admin Zone > Security > Usergroups

You can add, edit/remove usergroups. Many options within the adding and editing process as well.

So far as I have been able to test, charging negative points, or positive points for that matter, do not affect points that influence rank position. So trying to achieve a bump up in rank by awarding "charge member" points is a dead end.

Only "gift point transactions" and those points earned in doing some point-worthy task affect the rise in rank.

You can add, edit/remove usergroups.
if I change the original ocPortal usergroup names but leave them in the same rank order - even after I have had members in those groups, will this affect anything that will 'confuse' ocPortal or otherwise screw up the 'peace and order' of things?

No. ocProducts has done that with the usergroups here. They used to be different long ago.

So I can change the usergroup names and it won't affect anything except change the usergroup name, Right?

Found the way - was easy enough although to me somewhat obscure!
Just go to the Members list and CHOOSE the member you want to adjust points for > this takes you to the MEMBER PROFILE - go and choose from the list under EDIT PROFILE the link EDIT PROFILE - here you can adjust, add, takeaway points for:

* Points gained via CEDI
* Points gained via chat
* Points used
* Gift points Used
* Points gained via gifts
* Points gained via rating
* Points gained via voting in website polls

It is the Points gained via gifts that affects rank although if you go down lower on the page you can adjust the rank level by hand at the entry PRIMARY USERGROUP.

This will now give me the ability to award points (by hand, mind you though) for images that are submitted for insertion in a gallery by myself (reasons as noted in previous postings).

It is so obvious and easy to do that I don't know why I had such a hard time finding it.

Thanks for everyone's help.
