The SMTP details should only be filled in if mail can't be sent directly via the server. If you have neither working mail on the server, nor alternative SMTP details, ocPortal's minimum requirements aren't met. Being able to send out e-mails is a core function of the system, and used in many situations – so whilst the verification mail could be avoided by some code modification, it still wouldn't result in satisfactory performance.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.

You could disable email vertification, and run your own SMTP server on your computer. Although the email vertification setting on my ocPortal is disabled, but it still makes users validate for some reason.

The setting refers to validation of members, which is performed by staff. That option is to allow staff to vet members before they're allowed to log in.

We'll make it a bit more clear for a future release.
