 Hi all,

When I go from the SMF forums to OCPortal I am still logged in ok, but when I go the other way from any link in the portal to the forums you have to login all the time.
Is this normal.

This usually happens when site/forum cookie settings don't match up. Basically cookies can be saved at different precedence levels (defined by the domain/path settings), and that means that one can mask or be masked-by the other. It's important that the settings are fully set and exactly the same on the site and the forum.

Once they are the same, it's necessary to close down your browser, clear your web browsers cookies, and re-launch, to make sure that nothing is left behind from your old configuration.

This is extremely but unavoidably complex and confusing unfortunately (it even takes me about an hour each time to debug these scenarios myself), which is why we can't officially support cookie integration between site and forum.
One other possibility is if SMF has changed how it handles cookies since we wrote the integration, causing an incompatibility. If you suspect this may be true, please quote your SMF version.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Hi Chris, I will look into it closer. Send me a PM on how much OCportal would charge to fix this as visitors will be annoyed by this and leave. just in case I get stuck.
