I'm trying to create a slideshow on the main page that will link to important pages within the site. Each slideshow image will go to a different page.

I've followed the directions at http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex14/fadeinslideshow.htm

When I add

Code

<div id="fadeshow1"></div>

on the main page, it won't show.

Anyone have ideas what I can do or what other slideshow actually works for what I want to do?

Thanks!!

I also tried it in a miniblock with a no go if that helps.

The above was a new slideshow script. At least I'm getting an error instead of just nothingness.

I've just done a quick and dirty standalone test and it works fine, so there is nothing wrong with slideshow.js (a.k.a. fadeslideshow.js ).

Sorry couldn't do a test within ocPortal but I have other issues preventing me from doing so.

Well, I know it works outside of ocPortal. ;) It has to do with inside ocPortal or I would have not posted here.

I think I need to change the UTF-8 thingie.

So I went back to the original one from dynamic drive listed above and will await from Chris or someone who can point me in the right direction for javascript in ocPortal. :)

True, I thought it might have just been a corruption in your copy of the file as I've had strange thing like that happen to me on a couple of occasions.

Could be, but I'd be surprised if you needed to.

I do appreciate you trying. Changing to UTF-8 worked slightly for the error'd slideshow. Messed up other stuff tho, so had to change it back.

Didn't work for Dynamic Drive slideshow. Tried to edit and got a complete page error, so had to change it back to its original.

Wish it was easy to implement here, but I've hear much good things about ocPortal, so will just sit and wait for a response. Don't want to give up.

No problem.

It 'should' be easy, but sometimes you get these oddball ones that are stubborn.

I play around with third-part scripts in ocPortal all the time and have never run into this type of problem.

The script is loading, just not showing anything. No errors. It's weird. I've tried adding it to the main page and a miniblock. Both get the same results. I've moved the HEADER part to different parts of the header, but it didn't make a difference.

If you show the exact code you are using, perhaps somebody clued-up can spot an error or omission.

I know you posted a line of code when you started the topic, but I don't see it wrapped in 'html' or 'semihtml' tags.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Finally had a chance to do it in ocPortal. I placed it in a custom comcode tag and it behaves exactly as it does when standalone.

The only thing I had to be careful of was introducing extra blank lines in the imagearray which happened when I was copying between test files. That caused the images not to appear as it effectively corrupted the array.

1) I copied fadeslideshow.js to my loca server.

2) Then I created a custom comcode tag using:
Admin Zone Setup Custom Comcode Add Custom Comcode tag

2a) In the Replacement text field of the custom comcode tag I placed both the script (from the first edit box) and the html (from the second edit box).

2b) In the script I changed the reference for fadeslideshow.js to the one on my server.

2c) Saved my comcode tag (which I called test)

3) Then I just went to my main page, clicked on the Edit this page link at the bottom of the page and inserted "[test][/test]", the reference to my comcode tag, at the end of the page, and saved the changes.

When I reloaded the page the top image started cycling, as it did on the standalone, so was happy that it was working. Anything more then that and you are on your own I'm afraid.

Don't know what the other images are supposed to be doing, but they are behaving the same as in standalone which is enough for me.

This is probably what you were experiencing with the carefulness of the imagearray stuff. Did you copy and paste exactly how the site had it?

I'm getting this:

I used another slideshow script using your idea of a custom comcode for it…

works awesome!!!

This is the new one I used:

Image Slideshow v2 HTML Generator | ricocheting.com

Was much easier to input.

Thanks again tempt1024. You were a "great" help.

You're welcome.

Just one thing to note about using this as a comcode tag is to mark it as as a dangerous tag (in the comcode tag editor) so that only admin & staff can use it, otherwise it will be listed and available to guests & members to use.
