The last two times Bing has checked my sitemap it has found errors and flagged the sitemap accordingly. Unfortunately, the only information provided is that they found an "Unexpected Error".

I don't know whether t be concerned about this or not. For some reason, I have never indexed well in Bing using ocPortal. While I am fighting with Google to drop some of the many URLs that are essentially duplicates, Bing rarely adds pages to their index. For instance,  I currently have over 1400 links in Google (even though they had properly whittled it down previously into the 300s) but Bing says I have just 68 pages indexed. I am wondering if this error might further slow down Bing's indexing my site.

Does anyone else have a problem with their ocPortal-generated sitemap containing errors on Bing?

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Thanks for finding that, Chris.

Between this and the "ForceRecrawl" issue, it seems that Bing has some work cut out for them if the ever wish to truly compete with Google. I was truly surprised to see the error as: 1) Google doesn't have a problem; and 2) I (though no expert) looked at the sitemap and everything looked very orderly although I think the canonicalization improvements in the next release might help to remove possible duplicates.
