Site statistics doing crazy things

Upon looking at my "hits today" section of Site stats, I've been tracking it for about 2-3hrs now and they are fluctuating, but not in the way you'd expect. First check dailey hits were at 885, then it went to 932, half hour later it went to 824, then 914. Is this a known issue, or could anyone shed any light on this one???
