Site setup and javascript

Is it possible to start up with only the CMS and Adminzone zones? I tried to get rid of the welcome zone (by going into phpMyAdmin because there is no delete button for that zone) and it seemed to recreate itself. What is the best practice with modules? Specifically then I'm thinking about the login and joining modules that are in the Welcome Zone and I don't seem to be able to move them. Should other zones call them or should I somehow try add them to other zones?

If I want to pull news from an IPB board to the frontpage of my site then I guess I'll have to build my own module for that. The only thing I was worrying about in that respect was caching. I of course have it turned on so will I have to empty the cache every time I post news on the forum to make the front page of my site update?

I tried the admin interface with IE7. When I try to move nodes from one zone to another in the site tree there is a silent error:
Line: 243
Char: 22
Error: 'parentNode' is null or not an object
Code: 0
URL: mysite.com/adminzone/index.php?page=admin_sitetree&type=site

You can edit the zones and that will get rid of the zones you do not wish.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Well I go to the site editor and click edit on the regenerated welcome zone and there is no option to delete it.

The option to delete is in the site zone but since it is loaded with content then I can't delete it I think unless I remove some of that content, right? And I just don't feel like doing that because the sitetree has  sort of randomly not worked for me and the ftp method of deleting files also only seems to work for me once in a while.

You can edit the top template like I did, I actually took every thing out I did not need and put in the links that were not there.

Sure you can of course remove all links to it but the access to the services will still be there and I just wouldn't feel comfortable or feel professional enough if I left hidden content like that on my site. I want to have absolute control over what my guests can see and what they can't see.

You could set permission That would disallow access to part of the site including zones.

The Javascript error has now been fixed.

You can't delete the core zones. Although you can set permissions for things to stop ocPortal linking to them. For instance, if you deny access to the galleries module, the galleries functionality will not be present throughout the system.

If you don't like having a separate welcome zone and site zone, you can use redirect pages to make them seem as one. The Setup Wizard helps with that.

You can do IPB news using the main_forum_news block. Again, the Setup Wizard will make it easy to place that.

As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.

If you don't want to run through the setup wizard again, just create three new redirects (under adminzone > structure) that redirect welcome:start to site:start, welcome:panel_left to site:panel_left, and welcome:panel_right to start:panel_right (checking "transparent redirection" for each).

If you want it the main_forum_news block to pull from more then one forum do this.

Code

[block="Forums name, second forum name, third forum, and so on"]main_forum_news[/block] The last forum listed will be used in the title of the block so what I did was name the last one forums even though there is no forums forum.

Sorry for double post but guests can't edit their posts.

Is it just me or doesn't the menu button down in the left corner not work in IE7? Or does it only have to do with the menu dissapearing behind the white background?

Also how long does it take to get validation e-mails sent? I used a hotmail e-mail account, is that a problem? (Ps. Yes I check my junk mail too)

Sorry for triple post, it's just so hard having ideas and not having received the validation post  :'(

I wanted to suggest that in the catalogues that one can create a hierarchy of them. Sort of have "folder" or dummy catalogues that only help in grouping releveant catalogues together. For example if you were doing a clothing line then you might want to group together all womens clothing catalogues in one sort of group that is distinct from the mens clothing catalogue. This way you would sort of get a tree view of the cataglogues.

And how does the current catagory of the catalogues work? I couldn't make any sense of it.

Hi Guest,

. . . Sort of have "folder" or dummy catalogues that only help in grouping releveant catalogues together . . . then you might want to group together all womens clothing catalogues in one sort of group that is distinct from the mens clothing catalogue. This way you would sort of get a tree view of the cataglogues.

I've built a 'Directory' and a 'Dictionary' using the Catalogue function and I found I was able to 'group' things - indeed it was necessary - and you may like to take a look and expand on the idea for yourself.

The Catalogue function is very powerful and only your imagination limits what you should be able to do with it.

Also how long does it take to get validation e-mails sent? I used a hotmail e-mail account, is that a problem? (Ps. Yes I check my junk mail too)

Some of my users have complained that they never received an activation message when giving a hotmail address.  They were able to login with the Username and password, though.  Try it!

Is it just me or doesn't the menu button down in the left corner not work in IE7?

There was a problem with that function but it was fixed in version 3.0.9 or 3.0.10, so I'm surprised that you're still experiencing it.

You can find me at Anglo-Indian Portal - Welcome to Anglo-Indian Portal and you should look at the "A-I Directory" and "A-I Dictionary" entries in the menu on the left.

Good luck!

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

The Catalogue function is very handy and can be used for all kinds of things.
Reviews system, project manager, a database, a dictionary as fletch does with it, and more.
The posibilities with making your own fields makes it do almost any thing.

Very true Fletch. But the Catalogue is sort supposed to be the heart of my site and I know that I'll have tens up to hundred of catalogue's so for that reason alone I really wanted to be able to sort of group them together. But of course I guess I can create them just individually and then link them back and forth manually and try to create a tree structure feeling for the users.

I have tried to log into the forum but it says that my account hasn't been validated through e-mail  :'(

Good site that you have there Fletch :)

Ps. The catalogue thing is what makes me like ocPortal, I find it so strange that in most CMS productions out there then they force content to be of a ceirtan structure (the classic articles, lol).

Yes I agree about your PS comment.
In my opinion the only thing ocPortal is missing is an arcade but for most sites thats not important any way.
