Is the shoutbox intended for the side panels or can it be used for the center panel as well?

Like all things, trying it out is the best way to answer the question.

I just added a shoutbox to the "main" block of my site.

just hit edit this page and add block.  It says side block but it will obey and add it to the page.

Becomes a styling issue after that.

His site is LIVE, so he doesn't want to test it out on it. But the site he had it on before ocPortal he had a shoutbox center top. He doesn't want to have the site all messed up, so I asked.

What type of styling issue?

If you look at the templates named after blocks you'll see really the only difference between side and main templates is that the +START,BOX is given a different type (panel vs classic) and width (panel width vs no specified width).

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I guess I will test it out on my test site to play with the templates. And I should charge him if I make it look nice.

Right,  :ninja:  you trying to get crazy there Eric cause we can dance in PM brotha?

Seriously, Your friend should have a "dev" environment.. everyone with a site should.  So they can test and what not.  Whether that is out there on the web host (best option since it's the most like your LIVE site) or on their PC/notebook << includes Macs   .

The shoutbox is default styled for being in the sidebar and so it's narrow and tall.  You'll have to throw some CSS love at it to get it to look more at home in the main content block.  I'd go for individual styling on it too because its' going to be sharing some styling with the Sidebar goods and other common "Box" elements.

This requires what I mentioned earlier  "test environment"

I'll need to shorten up my responses so that I don't chime in like 2 posts later.

He made the change pretty much quickly. I helped him convert his member database to the ocPortal one and within 24 hours he had his site back up and running. It's mainly a forums based site. But he likes some of the features that come with ocPortal's main site, so he decided to make the move.

His shoutbox is on the side panel right now but it's not being used as much as his old one. Not too many people on his site scroll to the bottom, so he wants it back on top center fold again.

We'll get it working… I just want to ask the questions first before accidently breaking my sites.

Or read all the posts before you respond… and it's best to "edit" your last post if you're the last person to respond with suggestions. You can even ommit the "edited" so it looks like you didn't have to go back in.  ;)
