Hallo,

I'm weighing the options to begin selling items from my site.

There is currently one product - a software download - but I don't want the selling to be based around the Point system because visitors don't seem to be very interested in the perks or access to certain site features that come with earning points. They just want the software.

The subscription method is attractive due to the ability to tie it to group access levels - which purchasing a shop item doesn't seem to have - there doesn't seem to be a way to connect a shop item to a subscription item either.

The only problem with a subscription is that there doesn't seem to be a way to disable recurring charges without telling people they have to cancel before they get charged again, which we don't want to do for a couple reasons:

- People will forget, get confused and/or frustrated
- This would remove access to anything given by the subscription

Our ideal set up is a "Lifetime" subscription, so the length or expiration should be something like 100 years, but it appears that the max allowed is 5. Is there any way to adjust this limitation in the files and/or database?

Thanks in advance! :)

Honestly, the ocPortal ecommerce part is very limited. I remember suggesting the inclusion of a shopping cart some time back, but as I had went with just giving my book away and accepting donations, I am not certain if it was implemented or not.

One option you could try, if the shopping cart isn't included, is to have the software emailed either via cron job or by doing it manually upon receipt of payment.

I did that for a little while, but it honestly isn't the most ideal option IMO. I also set the undergroup upon receipt of payment for the item.

The subscription thing is a huge deal. I had to put in bigt bold red letters taht it is a renewing subscription, and still I had people forget and get upset when it renewed. So I had to end that as well

Unless Chris or someone else can confirm that the pay to download function is enabled or a way to turn off auto-renew subscriptions, I think - saddly - that your best bet would be a third party shopping cart program.

v10 will have non-recurring subscription support with full flexibility for defining term lengths, plus an addon that turns any pointstore item into a eCommerce item.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Thank you for suggestions and that, Mythus :)

And thank you to Chris for the info.

Guess we'll have to work around it while we wait.

Now I'm getting antsy for the release of V10 lol
