Hi All,

I now have a number of (large) downloads on my site that I'd like to limit accessibility by User Group without moving them out of the root category they are in.

In other words, I want to keep them visible within a category but add a message to the download along the lines of "You must be a member of the xxx group to download this item'.

The reasoning behind this is that some of my members drink-up everything they can get their hands on and it's putting a lot of pressure on my server/bandwidth.

Is there a simple solution to this?

TQ

The only way to segregate permissions is by category. However, you can set up a main_multi_content block to select and display downloads from multiple categories at once.

Also v10 will have a feature whereby you can make browsing a category show all entries from beneath it (so the browsing turns into a filter instead of a navigation tool).

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Hi Chris,

I've had a quick look at main_multi_content and I don't think it's the way to go for me.

I look forward to v10, even though it puts the fear of god into me when it comes to upgrading.

For now, I will reconsider how I define categories to overcome my problem.

Thanks for the info.
