I like us to be able to use any and all custom charterers.

As you can see here SITE

the site name is not displaying correctly, my site is for a online gaming Counter Strike Source clan that I run and I will restart but first as some of you have seen I am getting to know ocPortal first, the thing is with a gaming clan players names can be used with any character, I have changed the ocPortal database to use utf8_bin, but that alone does don't make it were the site name displays correctly.

I have noticed on every occasion on the many times I have reinstalled ocPortal; chooses utf8_swedish_ci
is this right or am I seeing things.

I like us to be able to use any and all custom characters.

This will help with the funky passwords too.

Thanks.

Hi,

This is all quite complex to explain.

MySQL I think talks about Swedish because it was originally developed in that kind of region of Northern Europe. What it really means is a latin/roman encoding: i.e the Western European character set.

However, the DB character set is not the issue here. ocPortal's "charset" language string would need to be changed to "utf-8". I think it you put "charset" in the Admin Zone search it'll take you to it.
PHP does not officially support Unicode though, which is why it is not enabled by default in ocPortal. It works in practice though. I think probably projects like phpBB probably ignore that it's not supported knowing that there'll be very few bugs anyway, but because ocPortal is bigger and more complex I wasn't 100% happy making the same decision. However I think you are very unlikely to see a bug if you do turn it on.

If a web browser has a non-supported character inputted, it will accept it but convert it to the HTML representation. For some language strings, and Comcode, ocPortal can recognise it. But not for everything. And when compared to a non-HTML-represented character it won't matchup.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

UPDATE:

Code

YOUR_URL/adminzone/index.php?page=admin_lang&type=misc&lang=EN&lang_file=global#jmp_charset

be ready for the longest load time.

WORKS!!

Lots of hidden setting there!  :o

You'll need to manually type utf-8 should be the first input box one of hundreds.

Then change your site name again to what your awesome characters are.

Then refresh everything with the Website cleanup tools…

I am calling this solved.

Thanks, Chris
