Hi,

Might be asking a stupidly obvious question here, but is it possible to have a rank system?
By this, I mean a system where members can be in the same usergroup (e.g. members) but have different rank images based on their post counts?

thanks
jon

I know what you mean and I think that exists but just not sure where as I use IP.Board 2.3 not ocf.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

You can do this, but not with all users being in the same Usergroup. It it managed via the Administration Zone -> Security -> Usergroups section. This is how it can be done:

  • Usergroup1 with a title of 'Level 1 member' (for example)
  • Usergroup2 with a title of 'Level 2 member' (for example)
  • et cetera
You make Usergroup1with all the permissions that you need, and set the members of that group to automatically get promoted to Usergroup2 when they have a certain number of points, and so forth. You then set Usergroup2 (and any others) to draw their permissions from Usergroup1. This way you can have multiple usergroups and therefore multiple rank-titles, but you only need to administrate the permissions on one.

So basically ocf has not rank system.  It would be neat if it did and as you make posts the image under your avvy changes like in many other forum scripts.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

The procedure I explained above will do exactly that. You can set different titles and group-images for each usergroup.

Not only is this a rank system in itself, you can also reward those who are automatically promoted to a new usergroup by giving them better permissions, such as a larger daily upload quota for example.

I get what you mean and that can be done in IP.board as well but ranks are still nice.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

But this is our rank system.

Thank you for your feedback.

I know its your rank system and I can see how in some ways it can be better and in other ways limiting.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

I don't see our method as limited in any way. Please elaborate.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Well my understanding of it was changed when I found out you could have a member in more then one group.
The way I was thinking it was limiting is you would have to create 5 or more groups for each type of member. Types being what I tipically call goups like members, forum moderators, global moderators, admins, and root admins.
So before I was informed that one of my recent sugestions was already part of ocf I thought that ranks would mean making close to 50 groups .
The only limitation I see now is that you do not have both a rank icon and a group icon.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

You can have both, because (I think) the system displays both the primary and secondary usergroups' icons/images.
