Is there a way to create usergroups / ranks in which a user is promoted to the next usergroup / rank based on NUMBER OF POSTS rather than POINTS?

Example:

admin has 9 posts.
When admin reaches 10 posts,
he gets promoted to a new group / rank and gets a new star rank image / user title.

Thanks.

In short your answer is no. You could simulate this by making points only count for posts but then there would be no points earned for other activities on the site.

Well that's a pretty big con isn't it?
Most CMS scripts with a forum module feature post ranks, especially forum scripts.

This should be added..

Why is it better to advance rank by posts, without consideration of other activities a member does on the site?

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I agree with Chris. Actually many other site activities are often more substantial in terms of member activity than just forum posts and i would give more weight for contribution in other areas than forum activity. Encouraging uploads or images or news articles help more for a site than just forum posts. But as said you could effectively make that by removing all point earnings on other stuff except forum posts.

Honoured member

I agree when there is a fairly quick and easy workaround removing points form anything other than posts it makes sense to keep it as it is.

Also help to reduce the i need to make 10 more posts to get the next rank which plagues so many forums out there.
