Recently we've been asked by a couple of people about getting the quick installer/AFM working for servers that don't support FTP but do support SFTP. This has taken me by surprise a bit to be honest, because until now I didn't know such servers existed. As we seem to be on to a new trend I've made a change that hopefully with allow ocPortal to work better on those servers. An altered version of the 3.1.1 quick installer is attached.

Community saint

My server supports both so I am greatful thanks.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Cannot install at all!

Hello,

My name is Florina. I tried installing OC using all the 3 methods, plus this version for SFTP. I cannot get the portal to work. I'm getting this error message:

ocPortal errorUnfortunately your server's installation of PHP does not have FTP ability. You must either choose the manual installer or petition your webhost to provide this facility. Details here are intended for the website/system-administrator, not for regular website users. If you are a regular website user, please let the website staff deal with this problem. Depending on the error, you may need to edit the base configuration (the info.php file).

This is weird because my server matches all the requirements for installing this script (it also has FTP ability) and I never had problems of this kind with other scripts.
I used similar installers and they all worked. Can you, please, tell me what may go wrong or how should I edit the info.php, to make it work?

Thank you.

Hi,

The requirement on FTP is for PHP, rather the whole server. In other words, the PHP language must have the appropriate PHP extension to be able to connect using FTP, and this is separate from whether the server itself supports FTP.

However, the manual installer definitely does not require FTP and I'd be very surprised if you are getting an error about it. Please try again with the manual installer package available from our main website.

Non-joined user

Thank you. I finally installed it manually. Probably I must have mistaken some permissions, before. This is indeed a wonderful script. I was impressed how easy I could make a new theme. I only have one problem. I am trying to change the color and the font of the logo, to match my theme, and it doesn't work with the global.css. I cleaned the template cache and it still didn't do it. Can you, please, tell me if there is another file that contains code for the logo. I kept looking but I couldn't find it. (And with this, I swear, I'll be done asking questions!)

Thanks a lot,

Florina

Hi,

I believe you're referring to the logo image, which is a standalone image, rather than something generated as a part of the CSS.
You'll need to edit the theme image named '-logo'. The quickest way to do it is just to hold down ctrl+alt+shift and click the logo. You'll get to the theme image editor screen for the particular theme image, with the option to upload a new one (which you'll need to create in whatever paint program you use).

I should note that there are various logo images used – they form part of a set, with different ones in the Admin Zone, CMS Zone, and the main site. The one in the main site is the most important one as this is the one exposed to your visitors.

I have already looked into those pictures and I didn't have the intention to change them because I liked them. I also didn't know if I could modify them, without messing up something, in the script. Why? Because I used the logo wizard and it appeared that this one was printing over those pictures and changing the data, both the html and the css. I mean, I made a dark-teal theme and I wanted red and bold "Westminster" for the logo. Well, when I changed the theme, I couldn't modify the weight, the color and the style of the logo from regular, blue, Arial to anything else. Maybe it can remain a suggestion for the future.

Again, I love this script and I plan on getting a lifetime registration, as soon as I can.

Thanks a lot,

Florina

The logo wizard saves new theme images, but it's fairly rudimentary and non-customisable. To create something more custom you'll still need to break out the paint program. There's a theme image called 'logo-template'. The Theme Wizard created this, and then the Logo Wizard would have used this to create your custom logo. You might want to use this as your own base, for emulating what the logo wizard did, but with full control.

I know this is a very old thread, but I'm trying to install ocportal on VPS that also uses sftp, and does not have a ftp server installed on it.

I can log into my VPS with filezilla using sftp, but when I try to run the installer attached here, it still fails.

ocPortal error

Cannot connect to the FTP server

Details here are intended for the website/system-administrator, not for regular website users. If you are a regular website user, please let the website staff deal with this problem.

Depending on the error, you may need to edit the base configuration (the info.php file).

ocProducts maintains full documentation for all procedures and tools. These may be found on the ocPortal website. If you are unable to easily solve this problem, we may be contacted from our website and can help resolve it for you.

Are you able to enable SuExec on the server? Modern ocPortal versions can install without FTP if SuExec is there, and generally SuExec is far better as a configuration in any situation.

There was a mistake in my original post here. We haven't added SFTP support (PHP does not have it unless a rare extension is installed) – we added FTP-SSL support, which is a different standard.

I should be able to enable suEXEC.  I've just never used it before, and am reading up now on how to possible enable it.

My VPS is using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with a LAMP.

Once I do Enable suEXEC.   What do you from the ocportal side of things?  Still attempt to run the attached installer?

The attached installer is ancient. The latest quick installer will work in a very straight forward way once you have SuExec.
