I've enabled suexec on my VPS and restarted apache2

it says it is enabled

Module suexec already enabled

And it shows up in apache2/mods-enabled.

Yet when I run the quick installer, I am still asked for ftp settings. and can't get past step 4.

all I can think is maybe reboot the VPS and see if does anything?

I tried the other advanced install method unziping the manual zip and running the fixperms script, but the installer still found permission issues.

You could manually fix the permission issues and run the manual extracter version again I suppose. Ultimately not an unpainfl install experience I know but you seem to be a rare case. Maybe it is something Chris would like to look into if (and that is probably a big if) he has time as your particular case might be useful to find the issues to include for future versions but I am sure something like this would have to fall under the paid support option since it is such a rare situation. Therfor my suggestion above might be your best no-cost solution.

I believe for SuExec to work, the actually Apache vhost must be configured with the username it needs to run as.

I"m learning the same, but still cant' get past step 4 on the quick install.

I've basically now followed this post here, setting and set the correct directories and user/group in www-data and the virtual host config file as well

http://www.server-world.info/en/note?os=Ubuntu_12.04&p=httpd&f=8

I will keep trouble shooting it, but if anyone else has thoughts, i'm open to ideas.

Make a file, test.php:

Code

<?php
$processUser = posix_getpwuid(posix_geteuid());
print $processUser['name'];
?>
and load up the URL to it. It will tell you the username, which should be the same as the username that owns (and has write permission to) the web directory you are installing to.

Oh and if you manually extracted files into there, ensure that you didn't do it with a user that the quick installer couldn't overwrite. E.g. if you manually extracted under your 'root' account, ocPortal would fail to overwrite those files.
