New to ocportal and can't seem to find the answer.

Hello, I've been working on trying out ocportal to see if it will fit my needs. So far it is working out pretty well though I do find that some things are just not that intuitive to work with.

one of the issues that is escaping me is applying for usergroups. I have found in a round about way using bread crumbs to find the place that actually allows my test user to apply to the group. But, after many hours of searching and researching. I am still not able to find how to notify my staff that the user want's to join the group and have them be able to approve or disprove as I see mentioned in the documentation.

So It comes down to: What are the easiest blocks/notification setup that would allow my members to apply to a group(easily visable) and have my staff approve or reject the application.

Thanks,

Bruce

I do find that some things are just not that intuitive to work with.

The first duty of anyone who finds something confusing is to submit a list so that we can hopefully work it so future people won't ;).

Regarding notifications - just have the staff members who want them edit their account and turn on the notifications for this. The whole notifications system is new to v8, it used to be mails to a staff address; it is possible the documentation could be out-dated (if so please let us know where).

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Thanks for the reply,

Is the notification system email only? I guess I was expecting some sort of indication inside the admin area that there were applications for user groups.(on the TO DO area or similar)

I did find the notification area in the account like you mentioned. But I haven't set up a mail server yet.

I am trying to set up a simple system where a member can apply to join a group. and any staff member can review and approve or reject the application.

I am wondering if I am missing the documentation on this feature as I see it mentioned a few times in the tutorials but can't seem to find much about the specifics of  how to apply and accept/reject. I only found the apply by clicking around the groups breadcrumbs.

So a link to the documentation would be of great help as well.

Thanks for your time,

Bruce

I've filed about adding it to the checklist on our feature tracker 0000494: Add usergroup membership approval to Admin Zone checklist - ocPortal feature tracker.

To do an approval manually simply go to view the group – you'll see unapproved members listed on there, if you have permission to approve them.

Thanks, I think I need to investigate the setup more, I still and unable to find a way to approve the applicants. As you can see on the attachment, the database shows 2 test subjects not approved(group 11), but the group owner doesn't even see that they have applied when viewing the group as you have mentioned.

This issue has been filed on the tracker as issue #503, with a fix.

Thanks! I see the links now.

And I thought I was going crazy there for a moment.

Seems to be working as expected.
