a summary of questions.

OK, have been fiddling and fiddling some more, have quite a few questions to ask. As I'm starting to scatter questions all over the forum thought I'd start my very own little thread. Sorry, "topic" ;)

Firstly, I am still not able to get the FAQ thingy to update with anything. I added the text about how users should see the main FAQ on my main site and linked it - but all it says is the standard default message. "If you have questions that are not covered in our FAQ, please post them in an appropriate forum."

If I cannot get this page to work there is little point in me editing any other pages.

Codey type question - "catalogue" just doens't seem right, so where would I find the relevant bit to change that word to "Stuff", as I cannot think of a more suitable word for FAQs, contacts, projects and whatever elese goes in there.

Would this mean changing image files or is there some way of editing that text? For now I can put up with Home being called "site" for example but this caltalogue thing has to go. Hang on, looking at it .. it is just text, so this should be easy to change, right?

There's a little box for sorting questions and answers - where do I put questions and answers, if I were to use this faq system?

Is it possible to remove some for the member groups? I just want guest, newby, regular, old timer, super member and moderator? I don't know what local and local hero are about and would rather just remove them.

And remind me, I keep losing it, where are the permissions for different levels again?

The award thing. Do I have to give the award, can the members give the award, how does it work?

In the next version please put point store and downloads together. If it's a free download, put '0 points' or something. I'm sure I have lots of further questions but will wait till I've resolved the above

An error occured occured at:
http://member.biggly.c...name=faqs&uploading=1

The full error details follow:

The requested resource does not exist. [Comcode]

Every time I try to update the FAQ I get this. How do I tell if I have "comcode" and where is it meant to be?

There are options to make catalogues more seamless, described in the advanced catalogues tutorial. You can also change any text you like via editing language strings.

I just want guest, newby, regular, old timer, super member and moderator? I don't know what local and local hero are about and would rather just remove them.

In the 'security' section of the Admin Zone there's an icon for managing usergroups. The usergroups are set up by default as a rank progression - so members start as newbie, and rise up as they accumulate points.

The award thing. Do I have to give the award, can the members give the award, how does it work?

It should be in one of the tutorials ("featured content" if I remember correctly). Awards are what staff give to content that's worthy of awarding. You then use the award block to automatically display the latest awarded content item.
You set up as many awards as you like, and each is tied to a content-type.

In the next version please put point store and downloads together.

Most of ocPortal can have some kind of interaction with points, and the point-store is only really a container for certain specific things that might only ever be used in correspondance with points; it'd be a fatal assumption if we assumed anyone who used the download system wanted a points economy on the website.
This is probably a case for template editing. It's perfectly understandable that you'd want on your specific site, to use downloads in this way – so you could simply edit the template for the front page of the point store to link to the download pages for various downloads you've added.

Every time I try to update the FAQ I get this. How do I tell if I have "comcode" and where is it meant to be?

The error message is actually indicating that something is referenced by Comcode, and that it doesn't exist. This could be an attachment, an image, an included document, or a linked document.
The message is certainly confusing in the context you're seeing it, so we'll clean that up for 3.0.11 (due out very soon).
I'm not sure the exact process you do to get this. Please describe what screens you use to enter what data, at what point the error occurs, and what the state of the FAQ category is after the error has occured.

Sorry for delay in replying, am trying to sort out my download thingy. Was about to add an image for a specific download but it's going on about a gallery, watermarks and all sorts - I just wanted to put an image for that download.

Mmm, doesn't seem possible to do that.

Looks like it will be an image for all downloads, or a gallery, for people to look at the one image for downloads..

And no, I certainly wouldn't want people commenting on the image…

???????

Like I say, sometimes the consistency comes across as thoughtless. I just want to add a thumbnail image to a specific download, such as the cover shot of an Ebook. I don't need an entire interactive gallery for 'root' nor people interacting with this 'resource'.

OK, language strings. Where would I find "language strings" and which bit do I edit?

HTML I can just about get my head round, php I have no clue whatsoever, so without very clear and direct instructions I have no real idea what you mean.

I shall check out the tutorial and see if I can make it more seamless, though to be honest I'm not sure why I'd want to? Seamless? You mean I can just link "FAQ" "Member's projects" etc, instead of hiding them in "catalogue"?

I can imagine the most frequent asked question - "Why do you hide the frequently asked question in the catalogue?", followed by the next most frequently asked question - "Why'd you call it a catalogue?"

"In the 'security' section of the Admin Zone there's an icon for managing usergroups. The usergroups are set up by default as a rank progression - so members start as newbie, and rise up as they accumulate points."

OK.. I'll have a look at that bit right now..

admin zone.. security.. user groups… edit usergroup.. choose from list.. edit "local".. Yay! Deleted it. And "local hero" too. Tip: Put the delete thing right at the bottom. Couldn't find it at the top, looked at the bottom, couldn't see it there either - but there is was, just not *right* at the bottom. A major command like "DELETE" should be at the very top or very bottom.

OK let's fiddle with newby.. Erm… why is it saying "
If a member does not have a custom title, then they will be given the title of their primary group. It could be considered a rank identifier." and this title is "regular member"?

I thought I was editing "newby"?

I AM editing newby, or newbie even. What's this about a regular member?

Directly underneath it says this level's TARGET is "regular". So his TITLE is "regular member" but his TARGET is "Regular"? I'm sorry but that makes no sense to me whatsoever. His greatest ambition in life is to be himself?

You mean he's a standard member, not a mod etc?

You see this is exactly why I say you need to check out conventional forums more. Anywhere else he's be a "standard member", non paid member, normal member or just "registered member" - not "regular member" for a newby. Regular means a regular visitor. A newby cannot be "regular".

Am off to have some fun with this bit and will be back..

:ninja: <- I've always wanted to use that smiley..

Think I've got the hang of the user group thingy, though got confused as thought the threshold bit was how many points to reach that level - then realised that's to get to the next level. Again due to the groups not being in a logical order.

If it's not a daft question, how committed are you to this product and future enhancements?

You've put a lot into it, so I'm guessing you're serious about it. I'd like to know for sure as I can see I'm going to have to put a lot of work into it too..  ;)

I notice on my pic above, the avatar thing, below that it says I'm now a 'regular member' - please clarify this for me, cos in my set up thingy it describes the group as the "human readable" title, so I figured that was what people would see below the avatar.

But looking at myself here, it seems it's the other way around?

For example if I became a "local hero", what would it say below my avatar - "regular member", or "local hero"?

*Confused, from Borneo*

PS The new version coming soon - will we be able to upgrade our current installation?

Hello,

Like I say, sometimes the consistency comes across as thoughtless.

It is important for users to be able to comment on download images on many classes of website. For instance, on a gaming site users are likely to want to discuss how a screenshot of a game addon was produced. Likewise, to be able to watermark screenshots is often important on websites – for instance, a photography website might take some photos with a camera and attach them to a download of the specs of that camera – they'd want to watermark the photos so that competing websites don't steal them.

I just want to add a thumbnail image to a specific download, such as the cover shot of an Ebook. I don't need an entire interactive gallery for 'root' nor people interacting with this 'resource'.

You can just add the image and it'll show as a thumbnail on the download page.

OK, language strings. Where would I find "language strings" and which bit do I edit?

There's an icon under 'style' in the Admin Zone.

You mean I can just link "FAQ" "Member's projects" etc, instead of hiding them in "catalogue"?

You can always link directly to something should you want to. All you need to do is edit the menu and put in the direct URL.
Seamless means that the FAQ (for example) will not appear so much like a catalogue, but more like something standalone.

I can imagine the most frequent asked question - "Why do you hide the frequently asked question in the catalogue?", followed by the next most frequently asked question - "Why'd you call it a catalogue?"

So we aren't duplicating code unnecessarily, and so that we can concentrate our efforts on a single system. By abstracting it, you can create as many different types of data stores as you like.
This is the definition of catalog[ue]:
A list or itemized display

A major command like "DELETE" should be at the very top or very bottom.

There's a spacer between two final options and these two final options are both relating to deleting. It's not appropriate to have an option that only takes effect when deletion is ticked, unless it is beneath that checkbox.

If a member does not have a custom title, then they will be given the title of their primary group. It could be considered a rank identifier." and this title is "regular member"?

I thought I was editing "newby"?

I AM editing newby, or newbie even. What's this about a regular member?

That's a slight bug: there's a 'Name' and a 'Title', but they both say 'Title' right now – we'll definitely fix this, it's definitely a problem.

Directly underneath it says this level's TARGET is "regular". So his TITLE is "regular member" but his TARGET is "Regular"? I'm sorry but that makes no sense to me whatsoever. His greatest ambition in life is to be himself?

This relates to the confusion from the above bug. This is a list of names, not titles. All the rank-progression groups have a title of 'Regular member', but 'Regular' is also a group name.

You see this is exactly why I say you need to check out conventional forums more. Anywhere else he's be a "standard member", non paid member, normal member or just "registered member" - not "regular member" for a newby. Regular means a regular visitor. A newby cannot be "regular".

Well, the word regular has two common meanings, so I would contest that it is anyway wrong. However what it is is confusing, so I have taken your advice and used 'standard member'. We don't use the term 'registered' in ocPortal for the same reason you don't like us using 'regular' here – registered means two things two, so we only ever use it to mean 'paid'.

it describes the group as the "human readable" title

Actually, it does say "human readable" name, but again, this slight mistake of ours causing lots of problems again.

"regular member", or "local hero"?

"regular member"

The new version coming soon - will we be able to upgrade our current installation?

Yes, we have a mature upgrade process. Instructions are always given in news posts.

If it's not a daft question, how committed are you to this product and future enhancements?

There will be a version 4, but we don't make enough sales for anyone to work fulltime anymore. The market's too saturated with 100's of products for anyone to notice us unless they are inclined to research first (which few do unfortunately).

Ya it took me months to find you. I just kept looking for some thing that works for me and this does.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Thank you, again a deep and thoughtful reply.

Yes, I can see that as a software seller the term 'registered' has a different meaning - to you as a software seller! To typical forum users it just means someone who has registered on the site, as opposed to 'guest'.

I've been playing with the software and have to admit, I'm impressed. It takes more than a little getting used to but you have some serious technology here.

Let me get my own site just how I want it, plus I'm revising my own software product right now, and I'll pitch in and help you with this, as it's potential is awesome.

You say I could just upload an image for the download - see, right there is what I've been saying. I've become so used to the lengthy waffle about every different thing I can do for everything that I actually went straight past that. I've already developed a "blind spot" to the attachment thing, because I see it everywhere.

I'm still not certain if attaching it would be a pic for that specific download or for the entire download catagory or whatever, I'll experiment.

One quickie question while I'm here - where do I find the "blocks" to edit? I managed to put a little welcome message on the welcome screen, and would like to add to it, but cannot remember where I found that. If I edit the page itself it just says "welcome block" - where IS the welcome block?

"The number of the image in the gallery to use as a thumbnail. For example, to use the first image, enter '0', and for the second, '1'"

I'm trying to edit the download, so as to add a pic, that's all it says about pics.

What gallery, the main gallery?

hehehe, the one time I could do with an attachment thingy and there isn't one

I like it though, the script in general. I think I will be sticking with it.

Right, there are two ways to add an image to a download, depending on what workflow you're in. If you've just added or edited the download, you'll get an do-next icon to add an image.
If you are viewing a download, you'll get a staff-action link to add an image.
Once you have an image it'll start to display as a thumbnail directly on the view page for the download.

One quickie question while I'm here - where do I find the "blocks" to edit? I managed to put a little welcome message on the welcome screen, and would like to add to it, but cannot remember where I found that. If I edit the page itself it just says "welcome block" - where IS the welcome block?

The blocks are, generally speaking, PHP files located in the sources/blocks directory. If you want to add or edit a block itself, then that's PHP programming. Blocks insert dynamic elements into Comcode that Comcode itself doesn't directly support. One of our tutorials (I think, Advanced Comcode Pages) lists all the blocks. Also there's an 'Add Block' button in the editor (when not in WYSIWYG mode) that gives you a wizard-like interface.

Thanks, though was able to edit it via the language thing. Couldn't find it as first as it's such a long page and didn't realise it hadn't finished loading when I searched the page.

I have another question - it's related to theming but I'll stick it here as it's not quite a standard question.. I've changed my site to grey, which suits my company image, with colorful buttons. I've managed to find a lot of the buttons to put color back into them but cannot find all of them.

For example track and untrack forum were in the 'custom image' folder of my custom theme, but darned if I can find the custom files for track and untrack topic, quote, edit, and report (forum). I can find AN edit button but it's not the same one.

What other lcations do you hide the customised buttons?

I'm having a real struggle with it as I could only download in ascii or whatever and the images are garbled. I'm trying to save orginal files as the new "451d148d1ee12" type files and thus "replace" them originals.

It's working fine, when I can find both the original and the new gray one - but I cannot find all the gray ones? I'm about 70% there.

They'll be there. You might want to order by file size if you are editing the files manually, or possibly as you're a programmer you could run some queries against the theme_images table. However, there's also a theme image editing interface you can use that'll let you choose by name and then upload replacements.

If I click "add image" while viewing all I get is "root", nothing specifically for that specific download.

Well I'll try it…

It worked! The first time, then I decided to change the image - and it the image vanished and ended up in the site's *main gallery*, which is exactly what I was trying to avoid.

Excuse me, what happened to the text I just typed? Mmmm, have to wait for the WYSIWYG thingy to load eh? So everything I just typed as an edit has gone. That's not an entirely good design.

What I was saying is that it seems it was clicking on 'root' that caused it to stick it in the main gallery. But since it said "required field" I figured I had to click on something, and that was the only something to click.

I'll have to dig around and see if the WYSIWYG thing can be set at different rank levels, as for a newby it's extremely off-putting to have your text vanish like that. I always have to keep in mind what a casual visitor will feel like, as opposed to myself as a dedicated webmaster. One of the most important elements of any website, forum or otherwise, is to keep in mind these 3 points for every single page - what do I want the visitor to KNOW, how do I want them to FEEL, and what do I want them to DO?

Know - I did not know for certain what I was doing - and I was right, I made a "mistake"

Do - What to do was not clear, too many options

Feel - irritated.

Result? Unproductive and inefficent attempt to tackle your softwate and yet more negative feedback from your newest user. By now you're probably starting to dislike me and wish I'd shut up but you should love me and buy me flowers - I'd LOVE to have users so dedicated to using my software that they kept coming back to complain! In my field it has to jump out of the box and into their hands like a lovable puppy, here you're selling something that the user will try and create their own thing with, so you get more chances. Please, work on this interface, for the interface IS your software to the end user.

Another quick question -are the tutorials available to members? If so, can I switch that off? Yeah I should log in and check for myself.. I just don't fancy paying to remove your branding then sending members to your website for tutorials…

Still struggling with these images - are some produced on the fly and perhaps were not downloaded because I hadn't viewed them yet? I'll try downloading again but I'm also struggling to find where some of the originals are as well. Talking of which, did you deliberately hide the background_image.png file shown on the sign-in screen? Can that only be changed after payment or something?

I'm getting a little fed up with the words "an error has occurred". Doing the SU login, as a new member, clicked "invoices" (what invoices, am I selling something? Did I buy something?). No entries. OK. Clicked "subscriptions" - an error has occurred.

Also as admin, looking at the front page, clicked on 'guide'. Then clicked on the link to where I can add news.. "page returned no output".

So I tried clicking where I could add an image - "no output" again. Not impressed.

Am of to tackle the images again..

With wifey's account, signed up for the newsletter.

Then tried to send a newsletter..

Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /home/biggly/www/member/adminzone/pages/modules/admin_newsle
tter.php on line 281

Mmm, I guess that means it was literally trying to send one, instead of create one. So looked via admin, found it in 'tools'.. thought I'd check the subscribed members, expecting to see wifey. Nope.

Ah, perhaps she needs to click a link in her email.. checked her email for her, cos I'm helpful like that.

Well she got an email, so did I, neither of which has any link to click, just the words "confirm subscription".

A. pointless, or B. a bug. I'd guess bug, since she's not registered to recieve newsletters?

I'm figuring there was supposed to be a link in that email, but there isn't one.
