Is there a way to get rid of the download & upload links? I don't wish to have anyone uploading or downloading any files on my site.

Admin >> Style >> Addons

Then select the item you wish to uninstall.

Caveat: Many files and images are removed when you uninstall. They are, however, retained for you (in a 'tarred' file I think) in case you change your mind and wish to re-enable the feature.

I also think you 'need' to keep the uploads feature, not least of all because many of the images 'n' such, that you add to pages, or categories, or catalogues, or other functions, are sent to the uploads folder on your server. This would be a matter of "cutting off your nose to ….." - you know what I mean!

You could also just turn off permissions to the downloads for specific usergroups.

Most likely the safest way.

Would turning off the permission to remove the link?

Aye, for any group that doesn't have permission. So if the group doesn't have permission to use uploading and what not, they would not even see the link.

That is what I do.

Like ocPortal? Want to thank Chris and gang somehow? Then help out in the chat room! It really needs your help! Just open it in a tab everytime you open your web browser, and when you hear a "ding", check it out!

There are various ways of setting permissions, and you can find out by reading the tutes, OR by trial and error. For example, restricting upload/download/view (stops the user from even seeing the item) can be set in one place and be overridden elsewhere, which effectively negates the initial restrictions you set up!

My personal preferences, to start with, would be:
  • Admin >> Setup >> Configuration >> Site options >> Upload and then set the limits to ZERO. This will notify the user that they have exceeded the upload limit and no transfer will take place. However, that isn't a 'nice' way to treat your users unless you dig out the corresponding INI file and change the wording of the error message. A lot of hassle!
  • Admin >> Security >> Usergroups (for each usergroup you want these restrictions to apply to) >> Restrictions and set the quota(s) to whatever you choose.
Have a tilt at those, and if it still isn't what you are aiming for, take a closer look at the Permission Tree and/or the Global Permissions and work your way through them. Read the advice carefully that each gives you about the settings.

Good luck, and if there are simpler ways I am sure somebody will step in and advise!
