Question about consequences of deleting a member

I have questions about the consequences of deleting a member. In my case I have had a group of members who have become members in order to post spam messages on the forums which is quite out of the norm for my site. Infact at one point I was thinking that I should allow them as they seemed to be the only ones posting on the Forums!

Decision was made by me to take action against any who are in this spamming group. At first I was willing to believe it was controllable by a warning. Of course I was nieve and these are not misguided members who have respect for set and distinct boundaries or other peoples property and rules. So, for me, all this, has recently come to a head and warning went to temporary banning from posting and this went to banning ALL IP's used by the members and finally I want to delete the member(s) from the site - they are already banned from logging in from any of the known IP's they've used.

I am wondering if I delete the member will ocPortal's programming be 'smart' enough to continue to ban those already banned IP numbers? and this even after deleting the member? Or do I loose enforcement for the bannishment of those IP if I delete the Member? and can someone use that user name again once it is deleted? How does this work?

Good question.

You might recall I had a similar issue a few months ago.

I didn't have to think about this one too much, and left the username in my database after banning the name and IP. The member I banned has such an inflated ego he wouldn't think of using ANOTHER name!

Would be interesting to know what Chris has to say about this one.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Fletch, Yes I remember your problem member mentioned a while back on the Forum.

For me, I had clicked the delete link and was being prompted by ocP to confirm that I really wanted to delete this member …and that's when the question flashed before my mind's eye

…I carefully backed off and ran to the Forum where I asked my question here! I need to know before I commit and click delete again!

IP banning is separate from member banning, so the bans would stay. Any links to IP-ban a member are a convenience only.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

so the IP's remained banned but deleting the member would allow for another to use the username but would have to access from a different IP. I believe the username could be added the restricted usernames list in Admin Zone > Setup > Configuration > Member and forum options > Restricted usernames
