Question. When someone downloads something from the downloads system, and say they have 100 points. They download a file that says "This will cost you 50 poinsts", shouldnt their points then be 50 left? If so, it doesnt work. It stays 100 points even after they have downloaded something.

If not, hmmm. It sort of defeats the points system alittle I think. I personally think it would dominate if it would go up and down as you were active through out the site. On my site, it revolves around downloads and files. If I have a file set to 50 points, members will just post several times, and never post again because they can now get the file anytime they want without being active no more. I cant raise it because the new members dont want to post double because of this first member…thats not right. So, if it could flexuate, that would be perfect. I will take a look at how to add this, but I dont know if I will be able to.

Thanks for reading.

Is the user downloading it the same user who submitted it? When submitting a download, the default setting is for the submitter to receive the points from each user who downloaded it, so if he himself downloaded it, he'd receive his points back.

There's a distinction between total points ever accumulated, and available points for spending. The former is intended to indicate the members activity to others, whilst the latter is the currency.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Hmmm. Wow, thats one complicated system. Although, I love it! Excellent work on that system!

Thanks for explaining it, both of you. I believe I get it better now. Exactly what I need. Thanks again!
