Just curious, I don't care for the whole giving points stuff…   is there a way to get rid of that part and just let people earn points for their actions ..   and it only advances them through user levels?

There is a 'use points' privilege, but I can't remember off-hand if it disables gift points or all points.

You could just change the template to remove the give form.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I'll go through the settings and see.  I'd rather avoid modding the base templates as when an update comes along it can be a PITA to remember what was done and put it all back.

Another option would be to set gift points per day to zero in the usergroups.

I can do that so they quit accumulating.   But I guess the real question is, if you remove the points add-on, how does user rank promotion work?

Well, that's a bummer.  So it's either heavily modify the addon to get rid of that stuff (no point in doing the templates alone, as the back code will still run)….  or deal with it.

I will think on a more elegant solution…

"I can do that so they quit accumulating"

There is nothing that runs each day adding to a pool of available gift points, so I'm pretty sure changing that option would be retroactive.

That was my wish exactly when some of my students misused that feature to elevate friends through the ranks, but on second thought there's always going to be someone to ruin any kind of point system. This is an important community feature, and when used adequately can spring encouragement to do more. I would not want it to be eliminated. A disabled gift giving switch on a member's profile would however be welcomed.;)

modified POINTS_PROFILE.tpl to get rid of give/recieved points stuff:

Attachment
» Download: POINTS_PROFILE.tpl (3 Kb, 129 downloads so far)

In sources/points.php, function total_points, commented out the first line about if use_points privilege applies.

In sources/points3.php, changed the $remaining= to

Code (php)

$remaining=total_points($member_id_of);

In adminzone>security>global privledges>points, removed the checks from everything, including 'use points' for everyone.

uninstalled point store and bank.   Now there is no way for users to 'use' points… they just add up per the config->points settings, and go towards user ranks, nothing more.

On some users, the 'in addition you have received' shows points where it shouldn't, but those are remants of people using the old system…  not going to fiddle about with getting rid of those occasion quirks..

See, I don't see the real value of 'giving' points.. and the leaderboard stuff never really changes because the longtime  users will always be at the top.     Two of the top 5 point holders on this site are names I don't even recognize from activity since I have been coming here.

I see your point Paul and agree that sometimes leaderboards type blocks may not seem to have much value. However believe me, when combined with other resources such as ocThanks and a Hall of Fame kind of page, the power of persuasion to do more might just be the trigger that will change the outlook of a young person stuck in the grayness of a developing world that left him behind. If this can change or improve just one of my students, than it did its job. Forgive me if what I write next sounds like a lecture, but I feel that many times users of modern technology see it only with eyes colored with where they live, but I urge all to not lose sight on what such open-source programs as ocPortal can do to make a huge difference in the lives of people not used to be given anything for free in life. ;):)

Jean, I understand what you are saying, but to me, getting imaginary points that I can't do much of anything with, is just excess in the system.

Chris, added an item to the tracker related to this…   the 'give points' button still shows up in posts when 'use points' is set to off for users.

Put the fix in the tracker text as well.   Guess everyone uses points so it was never noticed.

Good 'point':)
Great to know that there's a workable option.
Thanks!
