PHP WARNING [2] parse_ini_file() has been disabled for security reasons

I seem to have a problem

An error has occurred

PHP WARNING [2] parse_ini_file() has been disabled for security reasons in /home/prehisto/public_html/sources/support.php on line 1055 (version: 4.2.2, PHP version: 5.2.11, URL: /~prehisto/site/index.php?page=start)

Here is the stack trace:

Below is a stack trace revealing the state the software was in when the error occurred. If this represents a bug in the unmodified software, you may want to check ocPortal website for a fix, and if there isn't one, report this as a bug. Please note that merely posting a stack trace is not sufficient for us to solve your problem; the stack trace is just an aid that presents us with additional information. We still need to know the error message, what you tried to do, how you tried to do it, version numbers, and any other appropriate information.
We apologise for this problem and if it's a bug we hope you will work with us so that we can fix it for you promptly.

Hello,

Please ask your web host why they've disabled 'parse_ini_file'. It's a part of the PHP language ocPortal is using, but I think some hosts are erroneously disabling it. This said, they may have a reason I am not aware of so if they can show us this, we might be able to consider working around that rather than advising them to reenable it.

If I answered something that you think should be in the documentation, please take the initiative and add it to the community documentation. We really need people to help out here and build a well-organised large support resource.

Chris,

I've received 36 of these this morning and some where related to someone attempting to use the shoutbox.

I've tried to replicate this, but everything seems fine now except for this really annoying cookie I must remove every time I edit something on the site.

I believe that friendly is also using Elief.

It is becoming clear that they have been changing things around on their servers since late last week and this is disrupting our sites. Oh! and I noticed that when this happens (site jamming) the Main Site Zone Header text goes back to an older one that was changed last week. I had cleared all cache after some first page modifications and the addition of a new zone. It just so happens that I'm in the middle of adding lots of new content to my site and the perfectionist in me keeps having to rearrange things until it is satisfactory. But this situation is becoming a huge time waste. I know one thing; if I were to ask my last batch of students to go through this, they would have given up after the first sign of trouble. Signs of the times…maybe.

Sorry to vent about this here, especially when ocPortal has nothing to do with what is happening, but my story might be part of why it is so difficult to get people and small businesses to invest time in creating their own site when it is so easy to pop-up a facebook page. :$

Jean

P.S. I will send Elief a request for explanation.

The PHP WARNING has gone away without any effort on my part and I now have access to my site again. I believe Islander-aua may be right about Elief messing with their servers and this may be the culprit in a few of the recent 'disturbances in the force'.

I was contemplating, when in the midst of the 'lock-out', if this was a FATAL event and I had to start over with my current website re-do in ocPortal …would I go through the effort and start over again with ocPortal? Slight hesitation but YES, it really is proving itself to be a GREAT PLATFORM and aside from the learning curve, I am really enjoying the robust potential of this CMS. I am convinced and believe that the end result will be well worth the effort and time.

Thankfully I can pick up where I left off last night …so until the next bump in the road…

BTW Chris …when the release of 4.3 ???

I remember Chris mentioning in the past that he doesn't give specific dates and times. This helps in case there are minor touches needing to be made by expected dates. If you notice with other CMS sites who give dates and they expire, people whine and complain. By not giving an expected date, that eliminates some stress for all parties.

Follow-up from Elief:

Here is a copy of Elief's reply to my ticket:

Hello,

I am very sorry about the problem lately, we have allowed parse_ini_file again. However, we are currently experiencing some issues with MySQL. The site may be loading slow for the next few hours but after everything is resolved it should return to normal.

Good policy for this type of work and I never expected a response (chuckle!!!). It was more an interested shoulder chuck or elbo jab.

The bugs will dart and dash and hide in the dark, you think you got them but still find yourself fighting against the baby bug children of the parent bugs. I think it is amazing the bugs, as they appear, are dealt as quickly as they are. The ocPortal staff are awesome - you included, Chris Graham! I think all would say. Hear, hear!

Never the less I am watching the horizon for signs of the arrival of 4.3. and so are others.
