I thought that I remembered that you could assign an image to multiple galleries. Specifically, I thought you could have images available in a personal gallery which was available from a link in the member's profile while also making images available in a "subject" gallery (e.g, portraits or landscapes). The personal gallery container within the subject gallery is not really very effective in terms of presenting the body of work of an artist irrespective of who owns (uploads) it.

Am I misremembering or is there some setting that needs twiddling?

Thanks for any help.

Misremembering, but the tags feature along with the side_tag_cloud block is kind of similar.

Hmmm, must've been in my dreams. The tag cloud doesn't seem to change depending on the page viewed. At any rate, there is no link to a member's galleries. I haven't quite figured out how I will handle this situation as I believe the member galleries are quite important (more specifically, I will have several members who have in excess of fifty pieces each and they would like a way to present their collection as a whole). This is pretty typical with collectors be it art, coins, stamps or bugs.

I may end up having to use catalogs as xarex suggested but I am not sure that is a good (or workable) solution either.

Anyways, thanks for your answer. I was going crazy looking for some setting to make it work as I want.

It's not ideal but you could put a "find other stuff in other galleries" link into the gallery templates, calling up a search results URL for anything tagged with the codename for the gallery you're in. Or, put that in an iframe instead of a link.

I'd rather not mess with the templates especially since I have my hands full trying to fully grasp all the tools available in ocPortal.

But your answer did give me an idea. Much like I am having to do with the provenance information, I could instruct members to add their username to the keywords list for each image. The only problem is that it appears to me that the tag cloud is based on the whole site rather than the user's location within the site. If the tag cloud were to generate based on being in the galleries, this issue would be mostly addressed even if not in the ideal manner.

Does the tag cloud regenerate based on user location within the site or is it static for the whole site?

Bob

EDIT: Well, I was not completely imagining things. What I described is the way it works for personal blogs. I guess I assumed that galleries would work the same way.

I've spent some time thinking about this and decided that I will use keywords to handle both the username and the provenance data. It is less than ideal because I cannot make the information required but, with moderation, it will probably work.

I'll ask that members enter keywords when they submit an image like:
username,30x40,oil on canvas,1969

They can add whatever other keywords they deem helpful but those first ones should help to establish a useful tag cloud for categorization.

Does the tag cloud draw from forum posts or comments? If so, my idea won't work because the gallery keywords will be overwhelmed by forum and comment activity.

I'm a bit too busy to answer this in detail but I can quickly say the side_tag_cloud block has a parameter to determine what content types to consider.

Thanks for the nudge in the right direction. I Just copied and pasted code that was previously on the demo site.

One improvement would be to allow for selection of more than one type of content. For instance, I might want to include galleries, comcode pages and news (blogs) in the tag cloud.

Any chance that change might be made in the future?

Yes good point. You can do it manually in Comcode right now just by comma-separating them further, but we'll make a multi-select list so it's easier.

Thanks, Chris. Off to make the change manually. Looking forward to the multi-select.
