Questions about this site

Hi Chris, Allen, Phillip and Robbie!

I'm in a bit of a jam and was wondering if ya'll could help me out. My company's dotcom site is slated for a long overdue overhaul and the task has fallen on my desk. When this project was originally planned, OCP was commercial and getting money out of the powers that be is like pulling teeth, so I chose to go with Joomla as I'm familiar with the package and it's only real advantage: drop in themes. Most of my hair has now fallen out and all the horrifying memories of working with Joomla have come flooding back. The project is now 4 weeks past due (due to other items, not the least of which is the chore of working with Joomla) so I'm on a tight time frame. That's my boohoo, here's my thinking: if I can whip up a proof of concept in the next couple of days (primarily from a look and feel point of view), I can easily get ocPortal as our backend since all the other stuff I've been wading through on/with Joomla is a snap with OCP. My questions:

  1. The top menu on the ocPortal site: is it static or dynamic? A replacement for the zone menu?
  2. In your collective opinions, would it be a fairly quick process to drop a suckerfish style menu into the current zone menu placeholder?
  3. Has most/all of the ocPortal site been done with tempcode? Any hidden tricks?

Thanx in advance for any input and thoughts! I really don't want Joomla around anymore ;-)

Dynamic, and yes it is.

In your collective opinions, would it be a fairly quick process to drop a suckerfish style menu into the current zone menu placeholder?

Never heard of suckerfish until I just Googled it now, but ocPortal does have a dropdown menu type. It's basically drop in- just reference the type of dropdown and change the name of the menu you're referencing so you can make a new one. That's in HEADER.tpl.

Has most/all of the ocPortal site been done with tempcode?

Virtually no PHP changes were done. It's either Tempcode, or heavy use of CSS (most of the pages of the site were individually custom styled).

Any hidden tricks?

There are lots of clever tricks you can do when making themes. I often use some pretty advanced Tempcode.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Great, thanks Chris! I'm going to attempt to get this proof of concept done in the next 24 hours…ugh ;)

One of the prereqs for the dotcom is a horizontal dropdown menu situated right about where the zone menu is, so I'm going to attempt to replace it with a suckerfish or jscook type menu.

And thanks, I'll be sure to ask away in the Themeing forum if I run into issues. I'm sure my friend Ami will help me out if need be as well. ;)

Thanks again OCP!!

Yep I still have 2 threads about theme issues I am waiting on replies back on.
No hurry though I know you are busy.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Sorry I didn't reply. I do try to find time to reply to most topics, but there are some kinds I can't justify taking the time out of my schedule for, and time is always tight (I'm still working evenings and weekends trying to fit everything in, especially combining client work, maintenance and product work). For themeing I usually don't reply to very specific questions or general CSS problems. However to be fair you're trying to make themes for everybody so I should really reply - could you bump them please.
