...from the Forum's Database

The title says it all. I noticed this today when a new user registered on my site. In the list of online users in the side_users_online block, it shows the members actual username, rather than displaying their Display Name.

In Invision Board, you can register two names, basically. Your actual username and a "Display Name" which kind of overrides the display of the actual username. I think ocPortal should get the users Display Name, if they have one, rather than referring to them as their actual username. It was kind of funny actually after I think about it. I got an email from my IPB informing me of a new user registration, but the name in the email and the name in the side_users_online block were different. Let's just say I thought someone was playing tricks on me. :P

LOl you know I have mentioned this a lot and its good to see some one else mentioning it.
I mean I have had huge issues with this and I know I have a thread with this same issue.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Excuse the broken images in my posts (my avatar and signature) as my hosting is currently being upgraded to Reseller and I'm in the process of switching my domain over to new namesevers.

ah so why you going to reseller?
Any way Chris said this is not an easy process as I have asked but I am hopping it will be in version 4 to be honest but I am not sure if it will be or not.
heck as far as I know display names will never be supported by ocPortal which I feel is a shame.

I'm going Reseller to hopefully try and make some sort of profit out of operating my site. It's not very often these days that people donate to others unless they're some kind of non-profit organization.

I am not sure why you want TWO site user names at all. It is far from clear to me. There is a site (global made up user name at time of join) which is used in forum posts, emails etc. There is a second and completely different name available in the "Authors" area allowing a second and different site identity for all NEWS items. So why do you really want a third site name?… We do not use REAL NAME anywhere. AND if you want to really go to town you can set the system configuration files to allow multple identities using the same email address (In other words ANY NUMBER of different names) …. I must be missing something really basic here.

Part of the reason is security.
It hides your log in name so that hackers not only have to figure out the password but they also have to figure out the username (This was one of the reasons IPB added it)
Plus it can be fun for members to be able to buy a new display name or even just change it if your not using a market system like I am.
And its kind of like on msn where you have a log in name and a screen name.

Amichan why couldnt the site lock the account after 3 failed logins? That would be relatively easy I would imagine to deactivate the check box "validated" in my account. There are various name options available. I have listed in the previous post 2 standard ways of having different identities one for forums and a second for news and one way of having multiple identities however I think the thrust of this post is you are suggesting a site logon name giving access to "My account" and then being able to create a second "posting name" used everywhere? as different to the site logon name. If someone gets yr account name and cracks with password crack they will know yr posting name.

I guess to further enhance security disable guest posts to avoid "bots' posting to feedback. But there is a lot of security around banning IP address ranges etc. What exactly are you trying to achieve with this feature? The idea of having an "Author name"  as different from your site name is great and works well as you can publish news under a "nom de plume" for example.

The lock out after many tries is a feature of IPB as well as I have been locked out of my own account on a few sites I do to.
I forget my password some times as I have gone to using a random password generator.

Also I think some one is trying to get into my account on this site as I have had to reset my password here the other day as none that I used for here worked.
So another reason I think OCportal should have screen names or display names.

I think you do have the consept right but its more like a log in name and a display name as its the one every one sees.
