Forum address has changed and receiving 404 not found message

Access to Forum posts is impossible after Upgrade from 4.2.0 to 4.2.1

My problem started after an unsuccessful upgrade from 4.2.0 to 4.2.1 on my site in California. I blamed it on the Server's slow responsiveness and occasional data losses with a high probability of "I" having made a mess of it in the process. I used this occasion to move my site to a different provider closer to home; relatively speaking, as it is always hard to find a close landing when home is in the middle of the Atlantic.

It took me a while, but after 2 full restores, 1 "files" restore and several seemingly successful upgrades from 4.2.0 to 4.2.1. It finally connected with me that the problem occurred only after upgrading to 4.2.1, since 4.2.0 restores always worked fine.

So, here I am with a 4.2.0 that cannot be upgraded.

I've noticed that a bad upgrade changes my forum address: (this is a working 4.2 planaruba address)

From:
http://www.planaruba.c…/index.php?page=forumviewplanaruba.com/oc/forum/index.php?page=forumview
To: (the picture is from oc.arubalogistics, and the result was the same for planaruba)
http://www.planaruba.com/oc/forum/pg/forumview

And, that /pg/does not exist; hence the 404 not found (the picture is from oc.arubalogistics, and the result was the same for planaruba)

This is not an emergency, as 4.2.0 works fine, but any help and advice to figure this out will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jean

Hi,
It sounds like the .htaccess file just needs putting back.

As for failed upgrades I'd be interested to know what happened. We try to make it so things don't explode during an upgrade, but perhaps it timed out during extraction and left things in a partial state. In that circumstance uploading the files manually is usually the best course (works fine so long as addons have not been removed).

Once again, Thank you Chris for your quick and accurate response!

I immediately uploaded a backup .htaccess to my shadow site in California and that fixed the forums.
I then successfully upgraded my new Elief Server site from 4.2.0 to 4.2.1, and yet again, my forums were off limit.
After uploading the same backup .htaccess, the forums were immediately available.:)

Best regards,
Jean

For some reason when I did a fresh install of 4.2.1, the .htaccess wasn't there as well… just an FYI. I always back up the original one and change the recommended.htaccess …. but this time around there was no .htaccess to back up.

Ah yes, I can see what has happened here. In 4.2.1 we fixed a bug that stopped short URLs working on Elief, so after the upgrade the URLs output by ocPortal would be different and the htaccess needed.
This will affect any user who has turned on short URLs after installing (but they would not have worked), does not have the .htaccess file, and then upgrades.
