newsletter sending?

Hello,
I was trying to send newsletters using "test subscribers"…
When I have two newsletters: "General" and "Newsletter2", I can see lists of subscribers for both, but I can not correct those lists. And I have levels of subscription disabled (never enabled), but still see 4 levels in each newsletter list, each subscriber - in all 4 levels. Then when I send one of newsletters, it go to all subscribers and a few copies to each subscriber.
I deleted "Newsletter2", do not see it's list of subscribers any more, actually do not see any lists of subscribers… but they still get newsletters! I can not unsubscribe them.
I am giving up on using subscription for newsletters (it may be confusing for farmers using our website), so we shell have members only. But now with members only, if I try to choose: who will get this newsletter - it does not work for categories of members - only Admins get newsletters and subscribers (who I was trying to unsubscribe) from some not existing (invisible) list.
Did I do something wrong? Can I fix it? 156 views (97 Kb)

Sorry about this, you've found a nasty bug – ocPortal is sending out e-mails to all newsletters instead of just the one you choose.
This is why people received multiple e-mails, and also why people from a deleted newsletter also received e-mails.

The attached file will fix the problem:
Attachment
sources/newsletter.php
» Download: newsletter.php (12 Kb, 159 downloads so far)

I noted your point about interest levels appearing even when disabled. I will add something to the newsletter tutorial explaining why this is:
The interest levels feature is off-by-default, but even when disabled you will see it mentioned within the administrative interface. This is because if you ever do have it turned on you may accumulate member's who chose an interest level, and you may make use of that data even if you no longer request new subscribers to set their interest levels (by disabling them again).

From your post it sounds like you have a further problem sending e-mails to usergroups. Could you elaborate it on a bit now we have the subscription issue sorted. Are you saying that certain members do not receive the e-mails even when you select to send to their usergroups? Or is it that the tallies are incorrect?

As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.

Sorry, I called it wrong: not "categories of members", but "Usergroups". Yes, Super-moderators and Super-members do not receive newsletters, only Administrators get newsletters, and the administrator who actually is sending newsletter - get it 3 or more times (my understanding is: the sender should get it twice, first for preview and second when it is sent). Did not try to send it to Newbie (I have some "real people" in this usergroup on my site, did not want to bother them).

Another thing which may be confusing for our users: if someone is a member on the site and will subscribe for a newsletter, will he get the newsletter twice, when I send newsletter to subscribers and members? It seems like that. So, I should probably use only newsletter subscription function, or only membership… my "users" are usually not advanced computer users.

Thank you so much :D

Hi,

I can't think what would cause administrators to get extra e-mails and super-moderators not to get them, unless some e-mail addreses are mis-set in profiles, and/or if a spam blocker is blocking e-mails.
I could investigate further as support.

The newsletter system won't send duplicate e-mails if members are in multiple groups, or both groups and newsletters. The bug fixed in my last post where multiple e-mails were potentially sent to the wrong people was a unique problem.
