How to assign specific user so they can only see specific categories.

Hi all - very new OCPortal user - impressed so far.

My question is prob very basic - have had a good play around and scanned some of the posts on this forum but still a bit lost with this particular problem.

I want to have some users (or user groups) only access some pages. So user "john" can see all posts and that's it. But user "mary" can see everything John can see and also some material that John can't see.

So - my first issue is - where are "categories" defined? And second, in my usage - would these be standard Users or Staff? (I am guessing standard Users and then assigning them to a Group.)

(This site is to be for a intranet - I want casual public to see some material, registered users to see company related material and then higher registered users (eg: our dept managers) to see material that all others should not have access to.)

I am thinking that this is possible - and it is a case where I am missing something quite basic - so a pointer to a page or older forum post that outlines the above would be very helpful.

Thanks for reading.

Respect.

Yes, you'll want to Usergroups.
You can set permissions for each forum for viewing and posting privies for different usergroups.

Categories are defined with:
Admin Zone > Structure > Forums > Add forum grouping / Edit forum grouping
"grouping" is the categories.

Hi there Brynley, a really good place to start/review would be the tutorial; Access control and privileges
and also take a look in your: ADMIN ZONE/SECURITY/USERGROUPS/EDIT or ADD USERGROUPS
