Me needs help!

Hey Guys,
Thanks for having me here. I'm having a little difficulty getting my forum how I would like it. I would like to make a "Embed youtube video" button for the tooltip. At the moment I have to go comcode add tag >>> all the way to the bottom then click youtube video.

This will be to hard for the users on the forum who have no idea what comcode is.

Also, is there a way to make an upload image/attachment button for the tooltip for the same reason instead of having to go underneath the posting box to do it with the attachments?

Kind regards,
Tom

When I did the same thing in v7 it was messy and non-trivial, don't know if its any easier/harder in v9.

I have notes on how I did it if you are really interested, but its not for the faint-hearted and may be incomplete.

I just checked my notes, its been ages since I wrote it, and it seems mostly copy and paste, looks like the real messy part was discovering how to do it in the first place O_o .

What version are you on? I'll post my notes here and maybe another member can try it out and see how complete the notes are, as unfortunately I won't have time to play with it again.

Here goes…….

a) The following notes/code was written for v7, and may or may not work with V8/v9 as-is.

Expand:

b) The custom comcode tag that the button generates was for my custom youtube tag which just takes a video id (i.e. it generates: [youtube_video]Video_ID[/youtube_video] ), so the output may need to be tweaked to work with the standard ocPortal youtube tag.

c) Here is my youtube tag, in case anyone is interested:

Expand:

Be sure to add width=640,height=390 to the Parameters section when recreating this custom comcode tag.

d) The above technique can obviously be use to insert other buttons as well.

e) I think thats it. Its not as bad as it looks, just fiddly.

Good luck to anyone who chooses to take on the challenge.

I intend to 'take on the challenge' when other 'fings have settled down. If it is anything like your other tutes then I suspect I will have a nice shiny button before very long.

I'm sorry that it won't be in time to reassure Walbertross, but he should take it from me that following your advice is 'easy-peasy', and that he should go for it!

Off to attend to other matters, but I've just reminded myself that I already have a 'blank' PSD button that I can use for the YouTube add-in.

Thanks.

cheers

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

This addon allows you to do it without any Comcode tags at all:
Direct Video Link Posting - ocPortal.com

Something similar (but more extensive) is being built into v10.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I suspect that Chris' v10 enhancements will only expand on the types of URL's that will be auto-detected and turned into embedded media and I don't think it has anything to do with the editor interface, and therefore no new buttons. I'm sure Chris will correct me if I am wrong :ninja: .
