Integrated with SMF 2.0 but can't figure out how to display certain posts as news.

Hi everyone, I'm new to OCP but I recently got it up and running and integrated with an SMF 2 forum I have been using for several years. The install & integration went smoothly with no errors, and I can log into OCP using my Admin account from SMF. I also logged in with a basic member account from SMF as well. So it appears it successfully integrated with my Members and Membergroups from SMF.

However I have a few questions:

1. In OCP if I click the "Forums" link, the browser takes me to my forum page outside of OCP, and I still have to log in to my forum. Is this the intended normal behavior?

2. I have a Board created on my forum called "News & Hot Topics" I want anything posted to this Board to show up in OCP under my Main Forum News feed. I can't seem to get this to work. I have tried editing the Comcode box info.  In the Forum box I have tried putting the full url to the board and I also tried just by entering the board name "News & Hot Topics" (see Screenshot), but neither seem to work.

Could someone walk me through ALL the settings to make this work. I have searched Google, this forum, and the SMF forum trying to find the answer before making this post. This was a last resort. Any help on what I'm missing? Thanks in advance!

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

1– We don't officially support it because in each case it is rather too complex to explain to non-programmers, but in theory the support is there if cookie settings are perfectly aligned.

Chris thank you very much for the quick response! I uploaded the 2 .php files from fix #1311 and that did the trick! Unfortunately there still seems to be one small issue. The first time I checked member based, it displayed the threads with the Members avatars and it worked great:
Whether news will be given a member by-line instead of an author by-line. This option has no effect is the authors addon is not installed, as this situation will always yield a member by-line.

After I went back a while later I had the following error:

Critical error – bailing out

This is an error that has been elevated to critical error status because it occurred during the primary error mechanism reporting system itself (possibly due to it occuring within the standard output framework). It may be masking a secondary error that occurred before this, but was never output - if so, it is likely strongly related to this one, thus fixing this will fix the other.
PHP NOTICE [8] Undefined index: avatar in sources/forum/smf2.php on line 1200 (version: 9.0.8, PHP version: 5.2.17, URL: /data/preview.php?page=start&type=step2&utheme=default)

Not sure why it worked fine for a while then stopped, but I can go in and turn off "Member Based" and the error goes away, it just displays the topics with out the users avatars. Any Suggestions?

Also, on my SMF forum there is a Recent Posts link that takes you straight to the 10 most recent posts on the forum: Recent Posts

I thought maybe I could setup a Main News Forum Block and use the Forum Name: "Recent Posts" but it didn't generate anything in OCP. I feel like this is because it is it's own page on the Forum and not really a "Forum Name" like the other topics. Is there a way to create a Block that'll pull the Recent Posts down?

Thanks again!

Sorry, I'm afraid not (for the reason stated), unless there was custom coding. It's beyond the ability of the forum driver system to look across multiple forums, currently only our inbuilt forum has a way to do this in ocPortal.
