A continuation of a December, 2006, question

Hi, Chris:

In checking out the existing 3.x demo, I see that non-nested categories still seem to be the norm.  You probably do not remember, but I asked about nested category capability back in December of 2006, and I was wondering if that functionality had been added (or is about to be added?) anywhere along the way?  (And if anyone here has individually coded that functionality into their site?)

Best regards, thanks in advance for the response,

Hitch

Hi,

Are we talking about news categories? If so, yes these don't currently support nesting.

Thanks for the expeditious reply, although I wish your answer had been different.  I really do wish that you and your colleagues would consider a nested categories mechanism (or that someone would make a paid addon/hack for this functionality!).

Best regards,

Hitch

I would second this wish for future inclusion as I feel it's pretty critical. This same issue has hobbled Mambo/Joomla from day one (they have Section and Category, so in effect you get two levels deep, but not a great solution) and I only know of one addon for same that expands on this functionality.

Hi, Soccer Dad:

I'd pay, or contribute to a group effort, if it's not back-breaking.  This is pretty much the single thing that prevents me from using OCP.  I'm at the point of even looking at Bitrix Site Manager, simply to get the functionality I need, which is pretty much SSI (Single-Sign In) for paid membership news, forums, classifieds, with a wiki & blogs as gingerbread.  But my site simply cannot function without nested categories, it would be unmanageable and unwieldy for the users.

n.b. - nested categories are an absolute MUST for any content use/database setup for classifieds.  Just no way around that; people have to be able to drill-down for various object types for sale.  <shrug>.  JMHO.

Hi,

Catalogues have nested categories if you create them with the 'tree' option. These are what you'd use to implement classified ads (the catalogue system has special support for only showing entries for a set time before they're moved out- specifically implemented for classified ads :)).

You could potentially also use catalogues for news instead of the news module.

Also we could implement tree support (nesting) for news if you have the budget to pay for this to be developed. If you'd like a quote let me know :).

Using the catalogue system for classifieds would be a perfect fit (I'll try to get a "Community Tutorial" typed up this week Hitch that outlines this), however, I did not consider catalogues for news and I would imagine by extension, blogging. Gonna have to play with that idea this week as well.

Yes, I would very much like a quote for this.  Do you need me to PM you, or can you grab my email from my profile?

Brilliant, thanks, that would be great.  If I could EVER get this thing going, I'd be thrilled…for those of us who have very limited tech skills, trying to implement these features across the board is a serious challenge.  Thanks, SoccerDad.

I need to work out the cost, and then I'll PM you :).

Thanks, Chris, I'll look forward to it.  I'll also be interested in SoccerDad's response vis-a-vis the catalogues.
