am not sure which one to choosew

read the manual for multi-site-networks = this scenario applies correct to what I need to accomplish.

But also read about zones.
My question for appropriate installation is:
I will need to have the same template and basic theme for all 35 sites, except the header graphic is different for each site, the size is the same for each header graphic. Ccontent in right side column and center column is specific to each domain/website [i.e. separate database for each domain].

Forum will be shared by all domains.

All domains are established a long time ago - but I am totally restructuring my online presentation with the domains. And chose ocPortal to do it with [tried many different cms scripts, like typo3, ezpublish, etc, you name it, tried them all/more than 50 of them over the past 2 yrs].
Decided in favor of ocPortal over LifeRay because ocPortal seems to have a better vision for stability and the future.

here is the structure of my sites: J:\0_ABS_BIZ\!!-0-TEMPS\ABSGALLERYINC\ABSGALLERYINC_img.gif

I will use global top dropdown navigation [nothing major, only 1 level deep]
left column will be split in a top box [global again] and 2nd box that contains the specific domain/website navigation.

the navigations right now for me are not set in stone, I am flexible to which ever way it makes sense with ocPanel scripting/rendering/functionality easy.

I hope someone that knows a heck of a lot more than I do has some advice on this.
right now I am still stuck with the 1st install at stage 6 :(

Thanks in advance for any input and feedback ;)

look around how I have set up my 6 websites:

www.dimestoreproductions.com

I still have a lot of development yet to do with it, but Chris has been great so far with bug squishing in the more extreme multi-site things I've tossed at him.

If you have a specific question I can answer let me know.

Thanks 'AIPman1',
surveyed your site. Am assuming that 'related sites' are your other sites that are maintained.
Also see that you have each site on their own url as I need have it in my setup.
I think I will go with the network sites install.
But have yet to be able to correct the screeching halt on step 6 of the installation. No feedback or answer on that yet.
I will develop my setup and then let you know how I am doing too.
Thanks for the offer to answer questions  :)

all the related sites are using the same member base, and permissions for member groups are different in different sites, etc…so they are together in the same forum, with each site having it's own database.

Are you installing the RC2 current, or the 4.2.2 - 4.2.2 is pretty well stable. I have run into a few errors in the new 4.3 RC2, but I like to help with the debugging efforts and stay on top of the bleeding edge of features (I have a development team planning a webcomics module, and also a shipping USPS module for the shopping cart).

I'll be around!

am installing the stable 4.2.2 - but have not been able to get past the error on step 7. And no answer yet either. The process from step 1 to step 7 takes only 2 minutes - so, it's definitely not a timing problem on the server.

I am ready to ditch ocPortal, because I cannot wait for days to get info on how to fix an installation flaw. I did 3 times a clean install, every time I get the exact same error.

None of my sites are up right now and I have to have at least one or 2 of them running asap.

So, I guess, I will divert to Liferay or something else.  :(  :(

need  to add:
what I can do is - since I really am intrigued with ocPortal - is to put my 2 most important sites up normal way, and contact the ocPortal team for a cost estimate for them to create my entire setup in the long run.
Disappointing - but, have no choice.

sounds like a server issue, but OCPortal is worth the wait, and effort to learn it's ins and outs…in my opinion. Not on staff here, just a user. Chris is generally VERY helpful, but sometimes you do have to afford a guy a couple days off here and there…

ocPortal_Noob,
thanks.
Actually this topic should be retired because hopefully Chris and his Team will take on this project.
Cheers :)
