Can't tell if it's ocportal or my hosting package but...

this is the error message - I'm really fed up! Can anyone help please?

ocPortal error

Could not connect to database-server (Too many connections)

Details here are intended for the website/system-administrator, not for regular website users. If you are a regular website user, please let the website staff deal with this problem.

Depending on the error, you may need to edit the base configuration file.

ocProducts maintains full documentation for all procedures and tools. These may be found on the ocPortal website. If you are unable to easily solve this problem, we may be contacted from our website and can help resolve it for you.

This is the reply I've had from my hosting company:

Thank you for your enquiry.

This error means that you have created too many connection to the  database. You can only have up to 40 simultaneous connections to the  database from your website and it appears that your website may be  leaving connections open due to the scripting you have used.

You may have to change the scripting to correct the connections you  are making. You can also get this error by being logged on as the administrator (DBO) in two places. This sometimes just requires to restart your PC  or wait until the other connection terminated. [NOTE FROM ME: i'M NOT LOGGED ON TWICE ANYWHERE]

latest message on website is:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function do_lang() in /home/fhlinux170/f/female-friendly.com/user/htdocs/sources/s
ymbols.php
on line 1365

it looks like 2 many are connected to your site at once.
I got this once when over 60 some people were connected to my site and only 50 where allowed to be connected at once.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

website problems

Hi Ami,

how did you resolve it? I think that this is what caused my problems but I had one error message, and then another as you can see. I now have no idea how to resurrect it and my hosting people are saying that it's to do with the scripts

thanks

Claire

Hi,

We received a support ticket for this problem on your site by another user, who I assumed is an associate of yours. I've given a detailed reply in this ticket.
Please let me know if you'd like me to duplicate the reply here, or to handle the ticket and topic separately.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I am actually wondering what Chris did or said about it.
What I did is took off a few things like the shoutbox and that helped.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

This is my post from the support ticket…

I said

Hello,

This problem can happen for three reasons:

1) A server is overloaded with hits. (This does not seem likely as your server is loading pages quickly)

2) Something has gone wrong on the server and mySQL connections have been tied up and not released. This is not a problem that can be caused by any PHP script, as PHP auto-closes connections.
(This is the most likely cause)

3) Another user of a shared server is abusing it.

If you are on a shared server the web host should have investigated this, because it will be affecting all users of the shared server. The best remedy is usually to reset the mySQL server software, which will resolve the situation if it is problem '2'. Only a server administrator can do this.

I can see there is a topic from claire1066 about this on the forum. To avoid confusion, I'll post my replies here unless you'd prefer otherwise.

claire1066 has explained that now a different error is happening:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function do_lang() in /home/fhlinux170/f/female-friendly.com/user/htdocs/sources/s
ymbols.php on line 1365
I'm not sure why this would occur, but it may be caused by changes made in an attempt to work around the current problem; or it may be an unexpected secondary fault, stemming from the first fault.
If you'd like me to investigate this specific message, I'll need temporary FTP access to the server account.

Please let me know if I can help further. However, to a certain extent (for the main problem at least) this is a server administration issue and hence outside my direct control.

well mine was number 1 so my reply was some what correct.
When it happened to me I talked to my host and they said it was that I have 10 more people connected to my site then I was allowed for the shared account I had plus I was using up a lot of the cpu. Which was when I totally changed the site, even though the plan was to redo the site and rename it but I added getting a more and better hosting plan now I can have more then 50 people connected and I am using a different shout box and ipb 2.3.1.

Have not had the problem since and I have had more then that many people connected.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

You should not have to worry about the shoutbox issue I had but it was one of the first things I did afte this and the above was the rest.
I was using an IPB shoutbox add on that was a huge cpu hog I am now using another one that is way better and actually a lot like the shoutbox for ocPortal.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

The site is now repaired and open :).

It is a lovely site btw.

p.s. I'd have preferred to have got this error repaired for you faster, so if you or other customers do receive server problems like this in the future, please don't hesitate to open up a support ticket with access information - and then we'll be able to get it fixed in the first time slot available to us :).
