Hello,

Some users of my site have asked how multiple members can log in at the same time on the same computer, using the same browser. They said that Gmail, Yahoo and other email services allow this.

So far the only way I could get this to work on my computer was to use another browser to log in as a different user.

Am I missing some information here?

Thanks.

What browser are they using?

If they are saying that they can do it with Gmail, then I would like to know how. I can't log into multiple Gmail accounts at the same time in the same browser.

If they can do this, then its most likely a specific browser and/or a specific browser setting that it allowing it.

Gmail does support multiple logins now. You need to enable it in your account, then there's a jump thing in the top right.

Regarding ocPortal, there's no feature, but I can say I often use a Chrome 'Incognito Window' to have multiple logins on sites. It works by segregating the cookies.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I wasn't aware that gmail officially supported multiple gmail logins. Nice to know. Thanks Chris.

I was expecting some form of "private browsing" mode to be the means of managing multiple logins, precisely as you mention because of cookie segregation.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I didn't know about the Chrome 'Incognito Window". It's definitely superior to Firefox's Private Browsing function, which only allows the private browsing window to be open and everything else has to be closed. Chrome allows you to go back and forth.

The user who asked me, is using IE browser.
