I'm wanting to allow a number of members to moderate their own forums but not have moderation access to other forums. Is there a mechanism to allow this without the need of creating a bunch of usergroups and setting up all the permissions?

When I was first looking at using ocPortal I thought I read somewhere using the collaboration would allow this but I can't seem to be able to find it again.

I think you are looking for Clubs. The Clubs feature can be set to allow members to create their own clubs, for which they'd get their own forum created automagically that they are a moderator of.

Legends of Nor'Ova: A site powered by ocPortal; home of the Legends of Nor'Ova tabletop RPG wiki and community.

Like ocPortal? Want to thank Chris and gang somehow? Then help out in the chat room! It really needs your help! Just open it in a tab everytime you open your web browser, and when you hear a "ding", check it out!

According to this, http://ocportal.com/docs/tut_subcom.htm#title__7, I would still need to create a separate moderator group for each club.

Clubs said

The club forum has default permissions that only allow website staff and club members into it. The club functionality provides no special moderation controls - so by default the forum would need to be moderated by the website staff, rather than self-moderated. As it is a regular forum, additional permission changes can be achieved manually (for example, creating a new usergroup for the club's management and assigning moderator permissions over the forum to members of that).
I'll have to test the clubs feature to see what I could do with it.
