Members search via email address

Is there a way to search the members list by the email address they have used to login with...

This is handy for newsletters and people wanting to unsubscribe... had a classic case the other day

People split up and account using email address... other person does not have anything to do with site and can not log in to unsubscribe, doesn't even know login username etc... (this type of thing happens regularly... in various forms) in phpBB3 you can find a member using email addresses just wondering can we do the same here?

Regards

I don't think you can, and I'd be surprised if the answer from the developers comes back as "no, not yet.", at least for guests.

There are privacy issues with allowing people to search for email addresses.

But having a newsletter unsubscribe feature is another matter, and I don't see any privacy issues there provided a confirmation email is sent to the email address being unsubscribed.

EDIT: You can currently include an unsubscribe link in newsletters  ( ocPortal Tutorial: Running a newsletter - ocPortal.com ) but I'm assuming you are referring to situational where the user doesn't have an old newsletter to unsubscribe from.

EDIT2: Just remembered that users can use the Forgot your password? feature with an email address to get the username and new password.

I wouldn't expect or want it for guests or even members for that matter to be able to search the list via email address but only admin & staff… and I don't see that as a privacy issue if it is to do with the administration of the said site.

As stated I have had many reasons over the years that people want to un-subscribe because the email address that was used to sign up was a shared email account which is no longer… now the person getting the newsletter can not un-subscribe does not know the login name or password so they email the staff but since I can't search the members list via email we are stuck… they still receive the newsletter. They have never used the site before as it was an ex or heck a partner in one case that has died… I wouldn't expect the partner to know how or what to do, (luckily in this case we sorted it).

Heck even with the instructions on the newsletter, members that use the site regularly and can access there account and  I still get emails from them say can you unsubscribe me so I wouldn't expect if the person that doesn't use the site to know what to do if they could.

There are many other reasons I have used to in past where being able to search site via email is easier for admin.

oh well never mind… O_o ;)

I see, sorry for the confusion there Nighthawk. When I read:

I thought you may have also been asking about members self-servicing, hence the privacy concerns. But you are right of course, that there are no privacy concerns with staff/admin doing it.

If it helps, you can search the database directly. The newsletter subscription details are in the ocpo_newsletter_subscribe table and include the email address that is subscribed.

And if you want to find member details using an email address you can search the m_email_address column of the ocpo_f_members table.

I think it would be good to have a lookup by email dress in the admin. Maybe I am just spoiled by having such a lookup (along with phone number) in the e-commerce software I used to use. It was actually quite handy to have these alternate lookups.
