Curiously, the bottom news ticker works fine. All I could find to fix this problem was this, which I tried without success. I suspect its due to some files uploading incorrectly since I was having problems with news/blogs before - an integrity scan showed up a handful of files which I manually replaced and that fixed all the problems except this one, where the main (or side) news block won't display news or blogs.

In short... I suspect I need to reupload a few files associated with the news block. Any idea which files might need replacing?

You'll need to be provide some more details for us to fully understand…
  1. What exact block Comcode or parameters are you using?
  2. Is your news in blog category(s) or normal categories?
  3. Does it say "there are no entries" or just blank space?

Screenshots would help.

Thanks for getting back, sorry that I wasn't clear!

I'm using both the side_news and main_news blocks, and they've said "there is no news yet" since I started making my site a few days ago. Aside from the filters, I haven't touched the parameters, so they are just set to the default values that appear when you add the block. Here's the main_news block for example:

param is 14 (number of days to display)
member based is ticked
multiplier is set to 0.5
fallback full is set to 3
fallback archive is set to 6
blogs is set to -1 (so both blogs and news are shown)
historic is set to month
failsafe is unticked
caching is selected
quick cache is unticked

I changed the two filters to every combination in the hopes that its just looking in the wrong category, but it doesn't seem to help. There are a few pieces of both news articles and blogs in every category and I can filter and display any and all of those categories with the bottom_news ticker with no problems.

The original install for some reason didn't complete properly - news and blogs were posting, but the individual news/blog pages gave an error "the requested page gave no output", and my adminzone was missing the top menu. As I said, I manually I uploaded the missing files and that fixed everything, but the main_news block problem remained.

Thanks!

"historic is set to month" looks suspicious to me, I'll have a quick look to see how that works.

Yes, historic month will only pull up articles not produced this year, in the month we're in (i.e. May). You just want to leave that block setting blank. I think I'll move it to 'Advanced'.

Yes! Thats fixed it. I feel so stupid, I was sure I'd tried setting that to blank.

Thanks so much, I'm really impressed with OCPortal so far and the support from you guys is incredible.

Thanks again.

No problem. As I say I did feel that should have been changed (and it just was – 0000524: 'Historic' parameter for news blocks is advanced - ocPortal feature tracker). Little usability details matter.
