Spoke a little too soon Fletch …

Latest report on my experience with this issue …
  • I did all the changes and hotfixes, even though one of your 'changes' didn't appear to be exactly what I had in my login.php file.
  • Initially all seemed to work fine - until I deliberately logged out, and then logged in again. I was back to 'visible'.
  • I restored all changes back to originals (I started to doubt whether these changes were targeted at 8.1.1 or your earlier 7.x.x version)
  • I increased the login time
  • Using Chrome I login using the /pg/login/invisible suffix to my URL and don't log out again, and I stay invisible regardless of how frequently I close the browser and reopen it.

For now, that last scenario is working for me fine. If I want to go visible I logout and login, and I am back to 'normal'. I think I will stop pursuing the issue for the moment as there are a myriad of other things I need to concentrate on.

Not least of all is to give 9A1 a beasting …!!

 :thumbs:

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

The only thing I can think of is that maybe you applied Chris' patched in the wrong order. The patches have two files in common so they have to be applied in date order , i.e. oldest first.

Chris' changes were definitely not targeted to my 7.0.1 as I had to make additional changes to retrogress them to 7.0.1. Nothing material to invisibility though.

Haven't gotten around to testing with a reduced "Session expiry-time" myself.

I'm testing in both chrome and firefox. Chrome I close down but firefox I just close the tab as I need it running for long stretches at the moment for other reasons.

In both I stay invisible as long as the session does not expire. I can see a problem in the create_session function:

Code (php)

if (($invisible) && (get_option('is_on_invisibility')=='0')) $invisible=false;

but don't know if there is an issue with the calling function also, hence my call-out to Chris.

No problem, at least you have something you can work with in the meantime.

CHEATING

I was using the suffix /adminzone/login/invisible link that temp referred to, and it works for me in Chrome, even after closing and reopening the browser - as long as the tab is pinned and opens in the next session.

I've played around a few times with the 'edits' offered by temp and Chris, but somewhere along the line, something goes wrong. Even tried adding a 'login as invisible' link on selected pages, but when I check the page(s) using SU, I note that the link is visible to (and usable by) ALL users. Not what I wanted!

So I had a Zebedee-moment and did this:

The 'plus' side for me is that it is available as a single click on the Admin page, which only I get to see in any case, and it is quick-'n'-easy if I suddenly want to go invisible after having logged on normally.

Works for me!

For the link to be only visible to admins you need to use this:

Code

{+START,IF,{$IS_SUPER_ADMIN}}
--put link here---
{+END}
While that will hide the link to everyone but admins, it will not prevent someone from using the URL if they know it. That's one of the issues that Chris' patches fix. So you logging in as invisible is CHEATING :lol: .

Cheating, but I don't imagine anyone doing it ;). Match-key permissions could be set on :login:invisible.

WOW!

Two responses from two stalwarts of the coding pinnacle. Couldn't have hoped for a more positive response, and I intend to try out both suggestions.

HOWEVER …

This is also a pointer for the less talented coding community (of which I consider myself a founder member), showing that this software allows many ways to skin the proverbial cat!

I have also discovered that one advantage of what I've done is that, even after I have logged on normally as Admin, I can quickly 'go invisible' by clicking the link on the ADMIN start page at any time, and it removes my login details from any pages or blocks that previously show I was logged in, without having to 're-login' or jump through any other extra hoops!

To each his own …!!
