I'm planning to do an update to the latest version but I want to do a test first in case it all goes pear shaped.

I run Wampserver on my local PC, I can install a clean copy of Ocportal but when I import my database & run the config_editor.php script to try and recreate my live site I end up with a page of garbled text.

A screenshot of the garbled text would help. Sounds like a character encoding issue though. Database tables and databases themselves have an encoding, as do SQL dump files, and sometimes problems can happen when trying to reimport things, especially between different software (e.g. phpmyadmin, navicat, mysqldump, all might handle encoding differently).

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

This is the page I get when I load the site with the imported database.

Wow, that is a mess.

One possible cause of that is if we enable gzip encoding and something on the server corrupts the stream. Try removing this line from sources/global2.php:

Code

   @ini_set('zlib.output_compression',(get_option('gzip_output')=='1')?'On':'Off');

Will it also work to turn off gzip from the admin zone?
