Well-settled

As every time I update I lose huge amounts of the theming I've done.

and this time I've lost even more.

I'm hesitant to fix everything again, because as soon as I do RC4 will make me lose it all again! What would people suggest?

And I'm a little confused by this sentence in the installer:

The following files have been superseded by new versions, but you have overrides/customisations blocking the new versions. Look into this and consider reincorporating your changes into our new version. If this is not done, bugs (potentially security holes) may occur, or be left unfixed. If you edited using an inbuilt editor, the file on which you based it will be saved as file.editfrom: you may use a tool such as WinMerge to compare the editfrom file to your own, and then apply those same changes to the latest version of the file.

Does this mean the files have been replaced, and I should merge my changes into them, or that I need to copy these new files across manually? It says that I have "overrides/customisations blocking the new versions" - how do I switch these off?

Thanks.

ocPortal hasn't replaced them, and you can probably ignore the message.

What has been lost? I remember you having this problem before but I don't think you went over what had got lost. If we can identify specific problems we can then work on stopping them happening in the future.
ocPortal has backed up your files though. If you look in the CSS editor or manually using FTP you'll see for each file ocPortal has tried to merge ocPortal automatically backed your version up.

It's definitely worth getting used to WinMerge. It's a powerful tool and when fixing browser bugs or making small display improvements we don't have any choice but to change theme files, especally before a release goes final. But it's not a problem if you learn how to do file compares using WinMerge as it makes it very easy to compare and apply changes between different versions.

Quite a lot has changed. Top menu, header styles, background colour, fixed width, box background colours, borders. The thought of having to change it all again is quite daunting, which is why I am hesitant.

Oh, that's a nice theme you have (had) there!
Anyway, if you edit global.css you'll see the last revision is what you had before, please just restore that and it'll be fine I think.

Could you e-mail me a zipped copy of your css_custom folder so I can investigate why this is happening?

That's sorted the home page - thanks!  Would it be okay to do the same for ocf.css, as my forum isn't as beautiful as before ( ;) )?

I'll send try that catalogue fix and send you the file tomorrow PM (as long as you promise not to steal anything.  Or laugh at my truly appalling coding - this is my first ever attempt at a web site of any kind.)  I have to sleep now.

And how do I know if I need to replace any templstes?  You said I can "probably ignore the message".  I'm not too keen on probably.  what could happen.

ocf.css should probably be okay too.

The thing is we can hundreds of changes across new versions and I can't honestly remember what we changed in what files without going and running a diff between the previous version and the new one. That's why I try to get people to learn how to be able to do that themselves. If you get WinMerge you can tell it to compare the themes/default/templates/WHATEVER.tpl to the themes/yourtheme/templates_custom/WHATEVER.tpl it'll show you the differences and in a user-friendly way allow you to copy across individual differences and then re-save (after which you can reupload).

I won't steal your CSS or laugh ;).

Okay, just so I understand:

Do any templates I have in themes/yourtheme/templates_custom automatically override templates in themes/default/templates, regardless of the fact the version in the latter folder may be a newer version?

So If I've just modified a couple of templates to get rid of some ugly /br spaces, how do I revert to the new tpl as standard?

Yes

If you go to edit them in ocPortal it'll show you the original version on that screen and you can compare and copy/paste back. Or you can go and delete the .tpl file if you prefer to manipulate the files manually.

You can email me directly on my chris@ocportal.com address. We have a quota in place here to stop people using our server too much as a file sharing service.

Honoured member

Hey there, I would love to check out the site Dazed…

I followed the thread but didn't catch a link?

BTW, my theme always gets bashed every time I upgrade and I'm not messing with cache files either.  So I definitely feel your pain and/or hesitation.
