"Do you intend to join an existing network of multiple sites, and/or have separate forum and portal databases, and/or use separate application and database servers?
(requires more information)"
It says that in the installation.
Thats what I am talking about. I checked it but it did not ask for more then just the one IPB database log in name, location and other database info.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

My reply from the news discussion :)

ocPortal can integrate with one forum at a time, and this is specifed at installation as you found. You can have many ocPortal sites using one shared forum, but it doesn't make sense to have one ocPortal site using many forums (there would be conflicts, and it'd be very slow).

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

O I thought thats what that was for. I thought it was like IPB's converge program.
Might be time to reword that.

"and/or have separate forum"

Or that needs to be deleted.

I agree, it was a bit ambiguous. It now says "and/or have separated forum and portal databases" :). Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks I wonder though as you said you can link more then one ocportal right?
What if I installed ocptal for all 3 forums I have. Would I be able to have them all 3 share the same members.
I only really need 2 linked.
I think what I am going to do is on my download site where The forum is only used as a forum and not for much else I will just have ocportal and use it's forum.
Then On the other site which is an anime site and the forum is used for a lot more then just a forum. As we have a built in battle sytem and many other features.

Also thanks. I do still like your product and have told many others about it.

You can have sites sharing a single community of members. This is done by installing each site to use the same forum database.
Unfortunately if we said that one site could allow people from two separate forums to login we'd have big problems. ocPortal uses a number to refer to each member (the member ID), and that member comes from the forum. If there were two forums, there'd be two sets of members and therefore two sets of numbers, and we'd have to refer to each member by both the number and the forum they were on - that'd require major changes.

If however all the forums somehow shared a single member set, using something like converge, it would be theoretically possible - but ocPortal doesn't yet include special support for converge and I haven't looked at it. If converge works by making IPB sites share the members of a central site, it might work by installing ocPortal to use the database of the central site - we haven't tested this though.

We do have support for 'LDAP' which is something that achieves the same effect, but Invision Board doesn't, and we only support it in the enterprise version of ocPortal 3.

Well-settled

Actually you can fiddle about with different login systems in IPB 2.1.6's ACP I believe. I remember seeing an LDAP option in there but alas I wouldn't know how to use it and if I recall correctly it requires some custom programming to fully integrate.

I am working with it. I think I can get it working to a point any way.
