Hi Norman,

Please see the table on this page:

ocPortal Licensing

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

 Thank you, Chris.
Where can I download the free version?
Ah, another question.
If I use the free versione, can I upload it on a web site? Or can I use it only in local?

You can upload it to your webhost.
I do not think the local one is available any more.
You can get the free version from here.
ocPortal – helping you make your website

Its the same as the pay version except the copyright and powered by must remain.
With the free version you do not get as much access to parts of this site as you would with a paid version.
You get better support with a pay version.

Thats what I know about it.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Ok, during the install process it say this:

"There is no PHP GD extension on the server (no PHP graphics functionality). Officially ocPortal requires this, and a number of very useful features will not work without it (such as automatic thumbnail generation)."

I'm trying to install it on EasyPHP.

You need to read the install instructions that come with the install files.

You will need PhP installed preferably the latest version and MySQL for the DB.

There are many technical documents that come with OCP that are well worth reading and in fact are mandatory reading before you get too far ahead.

There are many forum threads and posts that will help you on OCP  Forum and you need to spend some days reading these bfore you waste a lot of your time getting no where fast.

As for OC being free well it is open source but the developers give a huge amount of their time to enhance, support, bug fix and generally hand hold so if you can afford the small licence I would sincerely recommend you pay it and become a customer.  Nothing is for free as at the end of the day the more we all support OCP the more we will all get out of it as a community. I for one am far more interested trying to support others in the forums if they are "customers" for the product.

My advice is to read the detailed instructions, check out the forums, pay the licence fee and become involved in the community. Good luck with yr deployment.

PS - It works well on a PC workstation built as a server (We used windows 2003 std server) for a start up trial but you will probably need to go to a hosted server environment for any major activity. We have just deployed an IBM3250 quad xenon processor on 8MB internet link which seems to run quite well.

I'm trying to install it on EasyPHP.

I'm not personally familiar with the EasyPHP distribution, but it may or may not contain the PHP GD extension. I think it probably does, and if so you just need to make a small edit to the php.ini file (that file is probably in your Windows directory, or the PHP installation directory). Typically you'd change a line from:

Code

; extension=php_gd2.dll
to:

Code

extension=php_gd2.dll

(removing the ';' bit enables the line)

If no such line exists, add it.

If EasyPHP hasn't come with GD (you can tell if there is no php_gd2.dll file in it's 'ext'/'extensions' directory) you'll need to find it from somewhere. Possibly EasyPHP supply it separately.

EDIT: Oh, and once it's done, you'll probably need to reset the web server.

You do mean restart right?

Not to get to far off topic but isn't a linux server better.
I run it locally for tests some times but I like it to be on the web that way its easier to get to from any where and I do not need to change my firewalls.

I have never used a windows web server, I know it works but linux for that is easy as most of it is set up depending on the distro.

I've never thought about there being a difference between the uses of the words 'reset' and 'restart', but I suppose, yes, that does make good sense.

ah you have not worked internet tech support like I have.
I have told customers to reset the router and they hit the reset button  O_o (making it so I then have to walk them though putting the IPs back in). So resetting to me means setting it back to defaults.
So I have gone to only saying restart or my co worker says power cycle.
Although I have had customers tell me its already started or on O_o .
Then I explain what restart means.

Most customers I have ever had dont save the router settings after they have put them in so when you Power Recycle or Restart its the same result for them as reseting back to defaults… :( Some newer routers/Modems are getting smart like Billion who now ask do you want to save the settings first before you software reset but of course there are the old die hards who flick the power switch and no matter how smart the manufacturer is they cant fix that..  :P  You are the bravest of brave and deserve an awared for getting involved in hardware customer support.!!!

I have it in the extension directory and without the ';' in the php.ini file.
I'm trying to install this ocProduct in local becouse I need to test it; I'm intresting in a system that can help me with my band's web site. I'm not a great coder.. so I can't code a web site from zero. Right now, trying to install it in local, I don't know what should I type in:

[FTP]: All :P
[General Settings] Domain
[ocPortal Settings] Database Host

If I try to click on "Install ocPortal", it say "Critical Error". :(

I'm not sure why GD isn't running if it's enabled in the PHP configuration, but it's probably a problem with how EasyPHP installed. However, it's not critical that you have it for ocPortal.

[FTP]: All :P

It's probably best if you use the manual installer. This is more suited to a Windows server, as you don't need to do any extra work for it as you would on Linux, plus it avoids needing an FTP server.

[General Settings] Domain

'localhost' or the name of your computer in your network settings.

[ocPortal Settings] Database Host

'localhost'
